A creative fan has just visualized their dream Marvel fighting game roster in the style of DC’s Injustice series. This comes as rumors of a NetherRealm-developed fighting game continue to circulate the web, although most industry insiders claim that the Mortal Kombat developer is instead focusing its efforts on the currently unannounced Mortal Kombat 12 rather than a Marvel game or even the equally hoped-for Injustice 3.

This hasn’t stopped fighting game fans from imagining who among Marvel’s legendary slate of comic book characters would be featured in a hypothetical fighting game, and a supposed leak of the NetherRealm Marvel game’s roster from back in July raised eyebrows thanks to its blend of both mainstream and obscure Marvel characters alongside surprise guest fighters like Mortal Kombat’s Raiden and the Star Wars Sequel Trilogy villain Kylo Ren. Gamers haven’t been treated to a triple-A, Marvel-based 2D fighting game since Marvel Vs. Capcom: Infinite launched to a lukewarm reception back in 2017, though smaller titles like Marvel Contest Of Champions have been filling this void on mobile phones.

Twitter user and The Escapist graphic designer Rock Rìder, who previously impressed Marvel’s Spider-Man developer Insomniac Games with his custom-made fan poster of its Marvel offerings, recently finished playing Injustice 2’s story campaign. To celebrate, he posted a custom-made character selection screen for a hypothetical Marvel fighting game in the style of NetherRealm’s latest DC title. Interestingly enough, Rock Rìder’s fan roster for this dream game consists of characters from recent Marvel titles, featuring gaming versions of Spider-Man, the Avengers, the Guardians Of The Galaxy, and even villains such as Doc Ock, Kingpin, and Thanos.

Indeed, Marvel has seen a wave of successful and high-quality triple-A video games over the past few years, with the aforementioned Marvel’s Spider-Man earning near-universal acclaim on PlayStation consoles and Marvel’s Guardians Of The Galaxy taking fans by surprise when it launched last fall. More interactive Marvel adventures are on the horizon as well, with Insomniac branching out beyond Spidey’s web of influence with the upcoming Marvel’s Wolverine and Marvel’s Midnight Suns looking to combine the supernatural portion of Marvel with X-COM style strategy gameplay.

With all these exciting Marvel games on the way, many feel the timing would be perfect for NetherRealm or another developer to announce a new Marvel fighting title featuring heroes and villains from across the popular comic book publisher’s famous assortment of characters. The line-up featured in Rock Rìder’s fan-made character selection screen seems like a logical roster for such a game, consisting of popular faces from across all of Marvel’s recent video games along with a few surprises like Ghost Rider and Blade. Only time will tell if NetherRealm does announce its own Marvel equivalent to the successful Injustice games, as it seems the studio is focusing its efforts on the Mortal Kombat franchise for the time being.
