Warning! Spoilers for Darkhold: Alpha #1 by Marvel Comics

Marvel Comics just revealed the fate of the Inhumans after the race of heroes hasn’t been seen in far too long. In Darkhold: Alpha #1, Black Bolt is chosen among the team Scarlet Witch assembles to stop the elder god Chthon from destroying the Marvel Universe. Once he arrives, the King of the Inhuman Royal Family reveals his race is still very much alive and has recently begun a journey to fortify their future after nearly being killed entirely.

The Inhumans are one of Marvel’s classic superteams, originally debuting back in 1961, appearing a couple of years after the X-Men. Inhumans are born with the Inhuman gene, which grants them powers once they enter the process of Terrigenesis. The race often secludes themselves in their own society, ruled by the Royal Family. Since then, they’ve played a notable role in the Marvel Universe, especially when Marvel Comics decided to sideline the X-Men due to rights issues, propelling them to the forefront of the comics. However, once Marvel reacquired the full rights to the X-Men, the Inhumans were sidelined following a commercial and critically panned live-action series. The show pushed the Inhumans to the side in the comics, as Marvel clearly didn’t believe in the property – as many of the heroes died in the Death of the Inhumans arc.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

In Darkhold Alpha #1 by Steve Orlando, Cian Tormey, Jesus Aburtov, and VC’s Clayton Cowles, Black Bolt returns as part of the team Scarlet Witch assembles to stop the end of the Marvel Universe. Black Bolt joins Iron Man, the Wasp, Spider-Man, and Blade in fitting the roles for the Darkhold Defenders, a former group of heroes who helped initially stop Chthon. However, when Black Bolt first arrives in Abysmia and is told about Scarlet Witch’s plan, he stresses he can’t join them as the Inhumans “just begun to fortify our future. My people deserve safety as they mend. And they must be my sole concern.”

Black Bolts got a point as Vox just nearly wiped out the entirety of the Inhumans, meaning the survivors have been left to pick up the pieces. However, after learning more about the threat of Chthon and the Other-Realm, Black Bolt realizes the threat is too big to ignore as the Inhumans won’t be safe if the elder god breaks free.

It might seem insignificant that the Inhumans and their whereabouts to be mentioned, but after being sidelined for a couple of years, it’s refreshing to see Black Bolt return. Hopefully, it’s the start of the Inhumans being brought back in the fold, even if it’s not as leading heroes in the Marvel Universe. The characters are too important to ignore just because their live-action attempt failed. It’s glad to see some of the Inhumans are alive and could come back eventually.
