Warning! Spoilers for The Ultimates #11 by Marvel Comics below.

Thanos was handed one of his most stunning defeats at the hands of the Ultimates, who went inside the Mad Titan’s mind to shut him down from within. In Ultimates #11, Thanos wreaked havoc against the Ultimates after breaking free from his containment cell. In order to stop the Marvel Comics supervillain, the cosmic super team came up with an incredible on-the-fly plan to shut down Thanos’ brain.

The Ultimates were formed to take on threats outside of Earth that could become problems for the planet. The intergalactic team consisted of a number of Marvel Comics’ powerhouses, including Captain Marvel, Blue Marvel, Black Panther, Spectrum, and America Chavez. In the series fifth issue, the team went into the deep space of nothing to assess the damage caused by the recent Secret Wars event. The team was saved by Galactus (the Lifebringer) after venturing too far and when the former Devourer of Worlds ripped open a hole into no-space, he inadvertently brought a trapped Thanos back with him.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

In Ultimates #11 by Al Ewing, Kenneth Rocafort, Djibril Morissette, Dan Brown, and VC’s Joe Sabino, Captain Marvel calls a yellow alert, after the unstable Conner Sims (Anti-Man) was manipulated into freeing Thanos from imprisonment aboard the Tri-Skeleton. The Ultimates confront Anti-Man and Thanos, while telling the former it’s not too late to join their side again. After Anti-Man teleports himself away from the battle, Thanos takes on the Ultimates, surviving a range of attacks including Captain Marvel channeling Blue Marvel’s energy, and Monica Rambeau going inside his mind – where she just sees darkness and horror. With the team getting smashed by the Mad Titan, Monica Rambeau uses the power cell that contained Anti-Man with her own energy to block Thanos’ electrical synapses.

Thanos scoffs at the Ultimates using “reclaimed junk” to try to defeat him, but the attack proves successful. The powerful blast completely shuts down Thanos as he falls to the ground. Black Panther tells the team the attack would have killed any other normal being but obviously, Thanos is much more than that.

Thanos was giving the Ultimates all they could handle before Monica Rambeau and Black Panther came up with the plan to reverse-engineer Anti-Man’s containment cell to shut down the Eternal’s brain. Ultimates #11 showed Thanos can be defeated from within his own mind, as long as you have Monica Rambeau, a powerful containment cell, and some of the smartest heroes on the Marvel Universe by your side.
