A new poll shows that Marvel is more popular than DC in the United States. However, the most popular superhero according to the study was Superman. The OnePoll survey, on behalf of Visit Anaheim, also revealed a ton of interesting results on which characters are the most popular across both Marvel and DC Comics.

The poll (H/T Newsarama) was created ahead of the new Avengers Campus coming to Disneyland. The survey looked at America’s favorite superhero, favorite villain, the superpower they’d want the most, whether they’re fans of superheroes in general, as well as whether they preferred Marvel to DC. The results show a surprising mix of favorites between both comic book companies and their properties.

The OnePoll survey found 64% of those polled saying they are fans of superheroes, with another 48% responding saying they enjoy superhero movies. The Avengers were voted as the most popular superhero team, while invisibility was voted as the most desired superhero power. When it came to the most popular heroes in the United States the list featured the names you’d more or less expect to show up. Superman ranked as the most popular character in the United States, followed by Spider-Man, Batman, Captain America, and Iron Man. The remaining top ten was rounded out by (in order) Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Captain Marvel, Black Panther, and Wolverine.

The most popular villain list was topped by Joker, with Catwoman, Venom (who is more of an antihero), Thanos and Lex Luthor in the top-five. Meanwhile, Magneto, Penguin, Harley Quinn, Mystique and Loki rounded out the list. Marvel received 33 percent of the vote over DC’s 17 percent when it came to the most popular property in the United States.

The results aren’t overly surprising as they seem to correlate heavily on the movie offerings by each comic book company. Marvel has made consistently good films for over a decade now, with few drops in quality over their 20+ releases. Meanwhile, DC struggled right out of the gate, but have found their footing more recently with the critical success of Wonder Woman, Joker, and Birds of Prey. There aren’t any names from the villains or heroes category that’s all that shocking, but it seems to suggest there’s more appetite for Superman to appear in future releases. Getting the number one spot ahead of Spider-Man and Batman, both of whom had successful films for over a decade now and are huge characters in their own right, is no small feat. The results aren’t indicative that Marvel is better than DC in terms of quality, but in the polling data, the former is favored considerably. At the very least, the findings are interesting and give you an idea of what’s fans like more these days.
