The heroes have a front-row seat to the battle that started the Marvel Universe, watching the First Sentry and the Primal Void fight for existence.

The Marvel Universe is currently in the Eighth Cosmos or the seventh iteration of the Multiverse. Doctor Strange assembled a new Defenders team alongside the Masked Raider after learning Doctor Carlo Zota was traveling back through the different Cosmos’ to unwrite reality. First, the Defenders have visited the Sixth Cosmos, where they added teammate Taaia, mother of Galactus. Next, the heroes ended up in a realm of pure magic when traveling back even further to the Fifth Cosmos. Finally, in the Fourth Cosmos, the Defenders met the archetypes of good and evil and the Pilgrim, whose death would create magic in the following Multiverse. Now, the heroes are in the Third Cosmos, where they learn even more about the origin of the Marvel Universe.

In Defenders #5 by Al Ewing, Javier Rodriguez, and VC’s Joe Caramagna, the Defenders are thrown directly into an epic battle between existence and nothingness. The Third Cosmos is said to be the first born from the multiversal cycle, in a time before magic and science. The heroes see the fight “that began them all” as Lifebringer One (First Sentry) and the Anti-All (Primal Void) fight to determine the fate of creation. However, Lifebringer One loses his advantage in the fight after Zota creates a force field, draining the First Sentry of his powers.

After Zota kills Masked Raider (who turns out to be himself from the future), he grows and takes on the Void. The Defenders link to their own timelines to combine their powers to restore Lifebringer One, who impales the Anti-All – saving existence in the process. The Defenders channeling their powers from their own Cosmos’ gave the First Sentry the strength needed to slay the Primal Void and create the ensuing Multiverses.

Defenders #5 lays massive groundwork for telling the origin of the Multiverse. The Third Cosmos is where existence and nothingness fought for creation and negation. The two cosmic entities existed before science, magic, and creation. It’s likely the two beings also were the archetypes for powerful forces that followed in future Cosmos, including the God of Light and King in Black, as well as Sentry and the Void. The fight between the First Sentry and the Primal Void led to the creation of the Marvel Universe and everything that followed. Ewing and Rodriguez did a brilliant job showing what started it all. Defenders #5 by Marvel Comics is in stores now.
