Marvel Comics is about to introduce a new version of the Ghost Rider whose ride might be the wildest thing any Spirit of Vengeance has ever ridden: a giant spider. In new solicits for the upcoming Savage Avengers #22, Conan the Barbarian tells Johnny Blaze he’s not the first Ghost Rider he’s ever encountered, as he met one who rode on the back of a massive, terrifying spider – yes, you read that correctly.

Johnny Blaze was Marvel’s first Ghost Rider with the Spirit of Vengeance, who debuted in Marvel Spotlight #5 and was co-created by Roy Thomas, Gary Friedrich, and Mike Ploog. However, Blaze wasn’t the first Ghost Rider. That title belongs to the Ghost Rider who is now known as the Phantom Rider – who appeared five years before the chain-wielding version readers are most familiar with today. That Ghost Rider rode a horse but didn’t have the Hellish powers future versions had, as he was a Western gunslinger who wore an all-white costume, which is quite the departure from how Ghost Rider’s would later look.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Since Blaze debuted, a number of other Ghost Riders have appeared in the comics, riding other vehicles as opposed to his motorcycle. Robbie Reyes rides a 1969 Dodge Charger, the first Ghost Rider drove a woolly mammoth in 10,000 BC, while other Ghost Riders such as Kushala rode on a fiery phantom horse. In the upcoming Savage Avengers #22, a new Ghost Rider will be introduced whose choice of transportation is more absurd than pretty much anything that’s come before him – as he will ride atop a giant spider.

  • Conan and Ghost Rider get to the bottom of Nightmare’s machinations and his werewolves’ origins…and Johnny Blaze isn’t the first Ghost Rider that Conan has encountered – he knew one back in Hyboria that rode around on a GIANT SPIDER. This chapter proves you can’t spell “flashback” without the “AAH!”

The issue will see Conan the Barbarian and Johnny Blaze trying to figure out where Nightmares werewolf army has come from. As they learn more, Conan will tell Blaze about the spider-riding Ghost Rider he met in the Hyborian Age, as flashbacks will show the pair encountering one another. Clearly, the experience had to be memorable, as you don’t run across a chain-wielding Spirit of Vengeance on top of a giant spider monster every day.

The spider-riding Ghost Rider might be a one-and-done character, but hopefully, it opens the door to even more ridiculous modes of transportation for the different versions of the character. How about a Ghost Rider riding an Ostrich? Or, how about a flame-ridden Giraffe? Although, it’s doubtful anything can top the sheer ridiculousness and scariness of a Ghost Rider riding a giant spider. It’s awesome and terrifying at the same time. Savage Avengers #22 is in comic book stores on July 22, 2021.
