The Marvel Zombies board game from CMON has successfully raised over $9 million on Kickstarter. CMON has released a number of board games based on popular IPs in the past, including the similarly Kickstarter-backed Masters of the Universe Board Game, tabletop games based on The Last of Us and Bloodborne, and the God of War card game, among others.

CMON initially announced the Marvel Zombies board game in November of last year, with the company partnering with Marvel and Spin Master Games to develop and produce it. The new game is built on the long-running Zombicide series of tabletop games. It features cooperative play for up to six players and miniatures based on the art of comic book legend Marco Checchetto. CMON finally revealed what the game and its miniatures would look like when the Kickstarter campaign for Marvel Zombies began on January 19, with pledge tiers ranging from $130 for just the core box all the way up to $615 for the complete set. The campaign was impressively able to reach its backing goal of $500,000 in just one day.

As reported by Wargamer, Marvel Zombies – A Zombicide Game was able to raise over $9 million during its 16-day funding period, with nearly 29,000 people backing the project. The game’s massive success now makes it one of the best-selling Kickstarter board games to date. According to its Kickstarter page, backers will be able to choose whether to get the primary Marvel Zombies core box when it goes to retail around October 2022 and then get the rest of the set sometime in June 2023 or wait until the latter date to get the complete set all at once. Like other tabletop games, such as last year’s Rainbow Six Siege Board Game, the Marvel Zombies board game set is more than just its primary core box. There’s also a secondary core box, six expansions, and four boxes of bonus hero miniatures. Notably, two of the game’s expansions, as well as the four bonus boxes of miniatures, are Kickstarter exclusives.

CMON has yet to announce when the secondary core set featuring the X-Men and the expansions that aren’t Kickstarter exclusives will come to retail, if at all, and how much each will cost. It’s possible that they’ll be available in stores when they begin shipping to Kickstarter backers in June 2023. But even then, both the October 2022 and the June 2023 dates are still estimates.

Raising over 18 times the original funding goal is an amazing feat for any Kickstarter campaign, let alone one featuring a board game. Though Kickstarter’s new business model may affect future tabletop campaigns, CMON has a history of successful campaigns. This means backers shouldn’t need to worry about getting their Marvel Zombies sets when they’re eventually released.
