Marvel’s Agents Of SHIELD continuously increased the quality of their storylines, with each passing season, along with the addition of mind-blowing future technology and extraordinary visuals. The casting of the series was almost perfect, with Clark Gregg (as Phil Coulson) stealing the show season after season as the Director of SHIELD.

Season three was, undoubtedly, the best of the franchise till then, which meant there were a lot of expectations riding on season four. Hive turned out to be a popular antagonist and replacing him with another enemy wasn’t going to be easy. Here’s how some of the best episodes from the fourth outing of the Marvel Original ranks according to IMDb.

10 “Ghost Rider: The Law Of Inferno Dynamics” (8.8)

In the eighth episode of season 4, when many innocent lives hang in the balance, Coulson talks Mace into allowing Yo-Yo Rodriguez, Quake, and The Ghost Rider to form an assault team and go after Eli Morrow, whose powers seem to be becoming stronger by the day. Also, Mace orders that upon the completion of the mission, Aida, the android, must be dismantled, to which Coulson agrees. This episode tells exactly what The Ghost Rider stands for.

9 “Ghost Rider: The Good Samaritan” (8.9)

In the sixth episode of season 4, some dark secrets about the book called Darkhold come to light, while Coulson and his team make their way to the Momentum Labs Facility. Back with Daisy Johnson, Robbie Reyes reveals his shocking story about how he came to become The Ghost Rider. There’s something about the character that makes the fans come back to him. The emotional attachment one feels with Robbie is very high.

May and Mack cannot seem to find Coulson, Fitz, and The Ghost Rider, which makes them fear the worst, while May suggests using the Darkhold in order to find a way to bring every one of them back.

7 “Identity And Change” (9.0)

In the seventeenth episode of season 4, Daisy and Jemma find it difficult to get out of The Framework but when they get to know that Radcliffe is also present here, she goes on a quest to find him and meet him. Phil Coulson, after taking some time to remember, finally agrees to listen to Daisy and Jemma. This episode also reveals Mack’s past, which is very heartbreaking. No wonder why every member of the SHIELD is declining to come out of here.

6 “No Regrets” (9.1)

In the eighteenth episode of season 4, Aida comes across as true evil because she seems to have the power to manipulate even the best of SHIELD. If Hive was a worthy antagonist, Aida has taken things to another level. She tells Daisy that she can get to be with Lincoln Campbell inside The Framework if she gives up her quest to get her friends out of here. Also, Fitz is becoming something entirely different.

5 “What If…” (9.2)

In the sixteenth episode of season 4, the dream of some Marvel fans to witness an alternate reality comes to fruition as The Framework sees the world gone mad. HYDRA has prevailed over SHIELD and Daisy, known as Skye in an alternate reality, is tasked with hunting down Inhumans because she is a HYDRA operative. She is also dating Grant Ward, much to her frustration. But she needs to bear with all this if she is to find a way out.

4 “Farewell, Cruel World” (9.2)

In the twentieth episode of season 4, the fans get to know exactly how difficult it is to leave one’s deepest, darkest desires. The Framework is giving every SHIELD member exactly what he/she wants, so why would they want to get out of there?

Daisy and Simmons are intent on coming out, but Mack isn’t. He wants to stay with his daughter, even if it means he would die with her. It’s a really emotional episode.

3 “The Return” (9.2)

In the penultimate episode of season 4, as the title suggests, the team returns from The Framework, only to understand the fact that Aida has already made plans to trap them. She is not going to let anyone get away, especially Fitz, because she wants to kill every single one of them. Daisy and Simmons are awake as well, but they have no time to celebrate because Aida is out for blood and she is showing no signs of stopping.

2 “World’s End” (9.2)

The season 4 finale has to take care of multiple storylines, starting with The Ghost Rider, whose surprising return has evened the odds for SHIELD. Meanwhile, Mack and Yo-Yo are still inside The Framework and if they don’t get out soon enough, they will die inside a world which never existed. The finale lives up to the expectations and makes season four better than it’s previous outings.

1 “Self Control” (9.5)

The fifteenth episode of season 4 is absolutely beautiful. There are so many tense scenes that one could be forgiven for thinking that this is the penultimate episode of the season or even the finale. LMD’s have raided The Playground, with Aida behind all this mess. Jemma Simmons and Daisy Johnson are the only remaining humans and they must find a way to run away from these deadly robots. They decide to go into The Framework, where their friends are trapped.
