Agents of SHIELD star Elizabeth Henstridge is happy with how the Marvel show ended, but she’s also open to returning as Jemma Simmons once again. Well before Scarlet Witch and Loki led their own MCU shows, Marvel made its first foray into television with Agents of SHIELD. The fan favorite series began in 2013 on ABC and followed miraculously revived Agent Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) as he led his new SHIELD team on various missions deemed too small for the Avengers’ intervention. Though it initially held multiple connections to the broader universe, Agents of SHIELD eventually struck out on its own, putting its canon status in question.

Since Agents of SHIELD came to a close in 2020, the question on many fans’ minds has been whether the show’s characters will ever return in the MCU proper. As many have pointed out time and time again, those like Quake (Chloe Bennett) could make excellent additions to the franchise. Recently, fans took to social media to get #SaveAgentsOfSHIELD trending, calling on Marvel to bring the characters back into the fold somehow.

Should Marvel decide to revive the agents of SHIELD, they already have one person they should call immediately. Elizabeth Henstridge, who played biochemist Jemma Simmons for all 7 seasons, recently sat down with ComicBook.com to promote her new Apple TV+ series Suspicion. During the conversation, she was asked if she would like to play Simmons again in the MCU, or if she was pleased with how Agents of SHIELD ended. “Yes to both,” Henstridge said before expanding with:

“I’m satisfied with how it ended. I think at the end of season five we thought that that was it and then to get two more seasons was just such a joy and I feel like we so much. I loved how it ended. I didn’t think that I would ever feel ready to walk away from that show, and I think the writers did a really great job.

“I’m so proud of that final episode and I think, yeah, we left it in a beautiful spot. But equally, I loved being on that show, I loved the family, I loved playing Simmons, so yeah, I’d always be open to reprising the role, definitely.”

The Agents of SHIELD season 7 finale saw every team member survive to get a happy ending. For Simmons, that meant retiring to the Scottish countryside with Fitz (Iain De Caestecker) and their daughter. It was a pretty conclusive ending to the series, yet it also gave the impression that more adventures could lie ahead for this group if Marvel wanted them to. Therefore, Henstridge’s response makes sense; it would be wonderful to see Simmons and the rest again, but bringing them back wouldn’t be to give them a better ending. They already got a pretty satisfying conclusion.

Right now, it looks like the passion for Agents of SHIELD is still there. Though some felt the show moved too slowly in its early seasons, Agents of SHIELD was eventually able to find its own footing and tell exciting Marvel stories that didn’t need to be beholden to the rest of the MCU. At the same time, it would be thrilling to see those like Simmons and Quake standing side by side with big screen heroes like Sam Wilson and Carol Danvers. With Netflix fan favorite Daredevil recently making some inroads in the MCU, perhaps it’s time to do the same for Agents of SHIELD.
