Another live-action Marvel superhero look is being brought to Marvel’s Avengers with the addition of Black Panther’s suit from Captain America: Civil War. The live-service game features a multitude of cosmetic skins for its roster of nine iconic Avengers. The newest hero added to Marvel’s Avengers is the king and guardian of Wakanda, Black Panther, who was added as a part of August’s War for Wakanda expansion.

Cosmetic items are a large part of Marvel’s Avengers ecosystem, allowing players to deck their favorite heroes out in classic designs from movies and comic books for a price. At launch, many players immediately requested skins based on the characters’ portrayals in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, or MCU. Crystal Dynamics eventually introduced add a set of suits inspired by the superhero team’s appearances in 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War, and then other MCU costumes followed, like Captain America’s suit from 2012’s The Avengers and outfits featured in Black Widow’s recent solo film. Most of the costumes in Marvel’s Avengers can only be obtained via the in-game store, which requires real-world currency to be spent. MCU-inspired suits cost up to $14 and remain hot items among players, so it makes sense that Crystal Dynamics is producing more of these cosmetics.

On Twitter, Marvel’s Avengers announced that Black Panther’s suit from 2016’s Captain America: Civil War will soon be added to the game’s Marketplace. The sleek design represents the late Chadwick Boseman’s very first onscreen appearance as the iconic Wakandan hero, with the costume having been replaced by the Black Panther MCU suit in the subsequent solo film. The Civil War suit’s mask and chest design are quite distinct from the MCU suit already available for Black Panther, and the earlier iteration will be available in the Marvel’s Avengers Marketplace on September 16.

Marvel’s Avengers recently celebrated its one-year anniversary, and it has been a very rocky start for the multiplayer superhero adventure thus far. An abundance of bugs and a strong focus microtransactions – coupled with a lack of meaningful endgame content – hurt the game’s reputation early on. However, Crystal Dynamics recently reconfirmed Spider-Man is still on Marvel’s Avengers’ roadmap, meaning PlayStation users will be able to acquire the web-slinging hero by the end of 2021. It has also been confirmed that new content is being planned for 2022, so abandoning Marvel’s Avengers doesn’t seem to be a part of the developer or publisher Square Enix’s current plans.

Black Panther’s costume in Captain America: Civil War marks the first time that Chadwick Boseman portrayed the legendary character on the big screen. Significant design differences between the Captain America: Civil War suit and its successor also means that there are likely many who prefer T’Challa’s earlier costume. By including both of Black Panther’s suits in Marvel’s Avengers, Crystal Dynamics means that fans can pay tribute to Chadwick Boseman’s celebrated adaptation in whichever way they please.
