The current-gen versions of Marvel’s Avengers finally have a release date, as the upgraded PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S ports will be released in March, alongside the addition of Hawkeye and his Future Imperfect story campaign. The next-gen (now current-gen) versions of Marvel’s Avengers were originally supposed to launch last year, but they were delayed into 2021.

Marvel’s Avengers is supposed to be a live service game, but there has only been a slow trickle of new content since launch. The game has received Kate Bishop and her associated story missions, but many have seen her addition as too little, too late. The player base for Marvel’s Avengers is diminishing on PC which is especially troubling for a game that is heavily entrenched in its multiplayer content.

Marvel’s Avengers isn’t out for the count just yet. Square Enix has announced that the PS5 and Xbox Series X versions of Marvel’s Avengers will launch on March 18, 2021. People who already own the PS4 or Xbox One versions of the game will receive the upgraded versions for free, with the caveat that disc owners need a disc-based system to upgrade. There is cross-gen play across all versions of the game. The upgraded version of Marvel’s Avengers can manage 4K resolution (1440p on Xbox Series S), with all load times drastically reduced by the system’s SSD. There are now higher-resolution textures and extended draw distance. A trailer of the PS5 version of Marvel’s Avengers in action has been uploaded to the official PlayStation YouTube channel.

The PS5/Xbox Series X versions will launch alongside Hawkeye and his Future Imperfect campaign. Hawkeye and his associated content will be free for all players to download. The new story missions involve Clint Barton being sent into an alternate future, where the Earth has been devastated by cosmic forces, and Maestro (an evil version of the Hulk) roams the world. This might have offered some blessed relief from fighting the same AIM troopers that appeared in endless waves in the base game, but they’re still around in the bad future of Marvel’s Avengers.

The existing console versions of Marvel’s Avengers faced a number of issues at launch, especially on the base PS4/Xbox One. The decreased load times alone will make Marvel’s Avengers a more enjoyable experience on current-gen systems. Whether this will be enough to revive interest in the game remains to be seen.

The PS5 and Xbox Series X/S versions of Marvel’s Avengers will be released on March 18, 2021. Marvel’s Avengers is available now on Google Stadia, PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
