On an unspecified date this summer, Crystal Dynamics will introduce Patrol Mode to Marvel’s Avengers, a new mission type consisting of the title’s biggest War Zone to date. This announcement comes on the heels of the game’s native release and upgrade on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S consoles.

The next-gen upgrade launched last week, alongside the Hawkeye-centric Operation Future Imperfect, which serves as the first major update Marvel’s Avengers has received since the advent of Kate Bishop in December. Crystal Dynamics recently teased even bigger plans for the rest of 2021. During the recent Square Enix Presents showcase, the developer unveiled War for Wakanda – a Black Panther event scheduled to go live in the latter part of this year. A content roadmap shared shortly thereafter shows what else Marvel’s Avengers has in store for players over the next several months, such as the Tachyon Anomaly and Red Room updates slated for sometime this spring.

In a post on the official Marvel’s Avengers Twitter account, Crystal Dynamics confirmed summer rollout plans for the new Patrol Mode mission type, though a specific launch date presently remains under lock and key. Patrol Mode will encourage exploration across the “largest War Zone to date,” an open space replete with quests and assignments that players can leisurely complete sans the usual mission constraints.

Such an addition should entice players to explore, which, in turn, seems as though it will beget more rewards. Considering the dearth of information about Patrol Mode, thus far, there’s no way of knowing what the rewards will entail. But the answers to whatever lingering questions fans may have are sure to surface ahead of the mode’s release in the coming months.

Marvel’s Avengers launched last fall to poor critical and fan reception, due in large part to the many bugs that plagued the experience, as well as the general lack of endgame content. Ultimately, the poor reception translated to disappointing sales that cost publisher Square Enix millions of dollars. It’s clear that neither Crystal Dynamic nor Square Enix is giving up on the live service anytime soon, though. Time will tell if the ongoing support proves enough to save the still struggling Avengers game in the long run.
