A comic-inspired Marvel’s Avengers skin for Iron Man will turn Tony Stark into a holographic artificial intelligence. Crystal Dynamics’ cooperative superhero brawler includes a large number of cosmetic items inspired by Earth’s Mightiest Heroes’ various different designs. While many of the game’s recent skins have been based on the Marvel Cinematic Universe, such as Iron Man 2‘s Suitcase Armor, other designs come from the heroes’ years of comic book history.

Marvel’s Avengers originally launched without any Marvel Cinematic Universe skins, and these live-action designs soon became a frequent fan request. Crystal Dynamics eventually added the Avengers’ iconic film appearances as paid cosmetics in the game’s Marketplace, starting with a set of skins inspired by Avengers: Endgame. The game’s MCU attire has since expanded to include both of Black Panther’s suits, Iron Man’s original armor from 2008 and Captain America’s bearded Avengers: Infinity War design. Despite the popularity of the MCU suits, Crystal Dynamics also continues adding skins pulled from the pages of Marvel Comics. For example, Captain America’s recently-added werewolf skin is based on a 1992 comic book storyline in which the Star-Spangled Avenger becomes the bestial Capwolf.

Now Marvel’s Avengers has announced, via Twitter, the comic book-inspired Artificial Genius Outfit for Iron Man. The unique new appearance in based on the 2016 comic storyline Infamous Iron Man, in which iconic antagonist Dr. Doom assumes the mantle of Iron Man while Tony Stark is in a coma. A holographic artificial reconstruction of Stark plays a role in the storyline, and this being serves as the basis for the Marvel’s Avengers skin. The outfit consists of a worn-down Iron Man suit and a holographic version of Stark’s head, making for a truly unique look for the Invincible Avenger. None of Iron Man’s current skins show him without his iconic helmet, so fans will likely enjoy the novelty of the outfit.

While Marvel’s Avengers has recently been praised for adding unique and memorable skins, the superhero title has also found an abundance of criticism. Particular controversy recently arose when the game added paid consumables to its Marketplace, a digital storefront specifically meant to sell only cosmetic items. The consumable boosters allow paying players to earn more experience and resources, which many fans saw as a pay-to-win scenario. Marvel’s Avengers removed the paid consumables after backlash from fans, which will hopefully be the start of more open communication between Crystal Dynamics and the playerbase.

More than a year since launch, Marvel’s Avengers still has not found solid footing. However, Crystal Dynamics seems keen to continue supporting the cooperative comic book title through new content and quality cosmetic skins. Many fans have complained that the game does not contain enough outfits based on specific comic book storylines, so the Artificial Genius Outfit will hopefully quell those concerns. With a holographic Tony Stark head in place of the hero’s iconic helmet, the skin will surely stand out against the rest of the Armored Avenger’s wardrobe.

Marvel’s Avengers is available on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PC and Google Stadia.
