The two Captain Americas of Marvel Comics, Steve Rogers and Sam Wilson, are proving two shields are better than one in a preview for Captain America #0. The special one-shot, on sale in print and digital April 20th, establishes a bold new era for the Star-Spangled Avenger, as two Captain Americas must come together to stop Arnim Zola’s most over the top scheme yet; in the process, they remind readers why Captain America’s shield is so important to him.

For over 80 years, Captain America has been one of Marvel’s flagship characters, serving as the moral core of their universe. Besides Steve Rogers, both Sam Wilson (the Falcon) and James Buchanan “Bucky” Barnes (the Winter Soldier) have held the title Captain America, and recently, Sam returned to the role. After a superlative multi-year run by Ta-Nehisi Coates, Marvel is giving Captain America a fresh new start in not one but two new titles. The first, Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty, will be written by Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzig and illustrated by Carmen Carnero, will follow the adventures of Steve Rogers while Captain America: Symbol of Truth, written by Tochi Onyebuchi and illustrated by R.B. Silva, will chronicle the exploits of Sam Wilson. Before these new books launch, their creative teams have united for Captain America #0, offering readers a bold new era for Captain America.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

The preview opens with Arnim Zola threatening to turn the people of Earth into dinosaurs. The two Captain Americas leap into battle, throwing their shields at Zola and his henchmen; the shields hit their intended targets, slowing down Zola’s advances. As Steve and Sam retrieve their shields, they banter back and forth about the sounds their shields make. As they saddle up to head back into battle, Steve compliments Sam’s new shield. Sam returns the compliment, and Steve calls his shield a “classic” that everyone loves. Sam then takes to the air, in a bid to stop Zola’s rocket from delivering its evil payload.

Captain America’s shield is the closest thing to a weapon he uses, and regardless of who wears the costume, the shield is an integral part of their identity. In this preview, Captain America’s shields justify their reputation, easily disarming Arnim Zola’s robotic henchmen. Both Steve and Sam are masters of their respective shields, each able to do amazing things with them, and then have a clever exchange about the sounds they make afterwards. Furthermore, there is no competition among the two Captain Americas, and instead they complimented each other on their shields; Steve’s is indeed a classic, but Sam’s points the way to a better future.

As Captain America stands on the edge of a new era, one that will see two active Captains. Before the new books premiere, however, Marvel’s two Captain Americas prove why two shields are better than one.
