Warning! Spoilers ahead for Thor #18

In Marvel’s Thor, the Nine Realms aren’t ready for the universe’s frog version of Thor, Throg, to take center stage and prove all his haters wrong. When the God of Thunder’s hammer has been stolen, it’s up to one hero to help him find it, and that hero is Throg. Operating as the perfect unsuspecting spy with a vast whisper network of creatures under his command, Throg is depicted in this issue as being perfectly capable and formidable rather than being a simple gimmick or Easter egg as he was in the MCU’s Loki series.

In Thor #18, from writer Donny Cates and guest artists Pasqual Fetty and Bob Quinn, Thor has come to realize what a huge mistake it was to leave Mjolnir on Earth. While he gave it up and asked Captain America and the Avengers to keep it safe, the mystical hammer was soon stolen as its rules for worthiness have changed, making it much easier to be lifted by others besides Thor. While Thor went to Loki to ask for his help to find out who might have taken his hammer, Loki directs him to someone much better suited to find Mjolnir: the one and only Throg.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

A brave frog who was once human, Throg became worthy enough to wield a sliver of uru that had broken off of Thor’s hammer, which became a mini-hammer known as Frogjolnir, turning him into the Frog of Thunder and defender of the marshy kingdom known as Foreverglade. While he just helped the armies of Asgard fight off Thor’s evil alter-ego Donald Blake in previous issues of Thor, the King of Asgard now needs Throg’s help to find his missing hammer. However, Throg reveals he already knew that the hammer was missing thanks to his impressive spy network of fellow frogs and creatures under his rule (much to Thor’s surprise).

As if Throg catching Thor off-guard wasn’t enough, after the Frog of Thunder details the members he wants for his team, he reveals that he’s already recruited them knowing that Thor was going to come and ask for his help. Clearly, Throg is more formidable and impressive than anyone realized, as he’s now Thor’s best chance at getting his hammer back while leading his new team of pet Avengers. Despite being an amphibian, Throg proves in this new issue that he’s every bit as mighty as the original Thor and demands the same level of respect from readers as well.

It’s going to be interesting to see where Throg and his new team of Avengers go from here. Where will their journey to find Thor’s hammer take them first? While it’s certainly going to be an adventure with all sorts of dangers and threats along the way, it’s pretty amusing to that Marvel has proven that Throg is basically just a smaller Thor when it comes to worthiness.
