[Warning: The following contains MAJOR SPOILERS for Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy.]

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy features Rocket Raccoon, Gamorra, Drax the Destroyer, Groot, and Star-Lord as a core cast, but other characters could join the Guardians in a sequel. Following the defeat of GOTG’s Universal Church of Truth and Grand Unifier Raker, the Guardians presumably enjoy a spike in popularity, as shown by their immediate trip to obtain more business cards. Two characters pledge their allegiance and apparently join the team as new galactic heroes-for-hire: Adam Warlock and Nikki. However, Adam Warlock and Nikki aren’t the only characters that could join the squad.

Though Eidos-Montreal insists Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy will have no DLC, a sequel is not out of the question. Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy’s ending provides the opportunity for another adventure, expanding on new members such as Adam Warlock and Nikki. The defeat of the Universal Church of Truth and the relationships between the existing Guardians opens the opportunity for membership growth. Though Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy’s main cast enjoys the most attention and will likely continue to do so if the title expands into a series, adding other characters could force character development and more diverse gameplay styles.

Much like the comics and MCU, Square Enix’s latest Marvel game, Guardians of the Galaxy, explores a diverse galaxy of colorful species, worlds, and adventures. The Guardians encounter many dangerous and powerful beings that would make perfect additions to the team. However, the relationship with these characters is questionable, especially considering the branching narratives in-game. Characters that appeared in-game are not the only characters that could appear in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy’s sequel, however, as Marvel’s comics has featured dozens of Guardians that Eidos Montreal could pull from.

Marvel’s Guardians Of The Galaxy 2 Crewmember – Yondu Udonta

Yondu Udonta has maintained a serious role in the Guardians of the Galaxy mythos since the teams’ first appearance, initially appearing as a blue-skinned archer for the original crew. He has since occupied a new role as Peter Quill’s surrogate father figure in most modern GOTG continuities. In Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy‘s story, Yondu Udonta met Peter in a Chitauri prison and helped him survive. The pair escaped together, leading Yondu to teach Peter the Ravager way and fight back against their captors. Though not providing much by way of morals or heroism, Yondu always forged a solid bond with Peter throughout their lives and utilized deadly skills. Formerly a Kree battle slave, Yondu understands the harsher realities of the galaxy and seeks control over his own life.

Marvel’s Guardians Of The Galaxy 2 Crewmember – Nova

Also known as Nova, Richard Rider is a prominent character in the Marvel universe generally and in the Guardians of the Galaxy’s comics specifically. He’s also important to the history of Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy’s Gamora. Unfortunately, he fails to appear in-game, despite the importance he holds with Gamora. The closest players get to meeting him is when the Nova Corps has begun to turn on another through a brief dialogue with Gamora. After betraying Thanos during the Galactic War, Gamora joined the Nova Corps to help defeat her father. During her time there, she met Richard Rider and helped him attack the Chitauri’s home planet. Unfortunately, the galaxy failed to recognize her as a hero due to her history, and they grew apart. Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy 2 could likely introduce Nova, either as Richard Rider or Sam Alexander, assuming the former’s death.

Marvel’s Guardians Of The Galaxy 2 Crewmember – Cosmo’s Puppy (Or Puppies)

One of the most adorable scenes in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy involves Cosmo the Spacedog. As the head of security in Knowhere, Cosmo deals with the worst of the worst and has a record with Star-Lord. Unfortunately, the Galactic War and the Universal Church of Truth’s incidents caused Cosmo to suffer severe losses in his security forces. Knowhere is generally considered a rough, unlawful setting, leaving Cosmo outnumbered by criminals and mercenaries.

During Cosmo’s cutscene, Peter Quill spends time with several puppies running amok throughout the prison. One puppy cuddles into Peter’s lap and receives some much-deserved pets for the action. Though Cosmo was once a Guardian, his occupation on Knowhere prevents serious commitment to the team. Replacing Cosmo with his puppies would be an adorable addition to the team and provide comic relief with Rocket’s aversion to canines.

Marvel’s Guardians Of The Galaxy 2 Crewmember – Agent Venom

With the popularity of Venom and Spider-Man soaring and Marvel’s video games creating their own continuity, Agent Venom could appear in the next GOTG game. Although the game features a subtle Easter egg relating to Spider-Man, Marvel’s GOTG also references Venom and the symbiotes. Lady Hellbender unleashes “Klyntarian gas” upon the Guardians at one point, with Klyntar being the true name of the symbiotes. Drax also subtly references Knull – the god of the symbiotes – while speculating what it would’ve taken to decapitate a celestial, stating that it would’ve probably required a massive sword, which was what Knull used in the comics.

Agent Venom enjoys a more extraterrestrial lifestyle, unbound from Earth’s gravitational pull. His powers and adaptability would fit nicely with Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy combat mechanics, while his violent personality would serve as a contrast to the team’s sarcastic nature. Agent Venom could provide a deeper connection to Earth and Klyntar and open the in-game universe to the darker sides of the Galaxy. With the conclusion of the Galactic War against the Chitauri and Thanos, Agent Venom could introduce the galaxy’s next big threat: symbiotes.

Marvel’s Guardians Of The Galaxy 2 Crewmember – Lady Hellbender

Lady Hellbender’s allegiance in Guardians of the Galaxy shifts between friend and foe, acting as the Guardians’ hunter, ally, or enemy depending on dialogue choices made in-game. Hellbender proves her power by taming some of the galaxy’s most dangerous and endangered beasts while also enjoying impressive strength, stamina, and tracking skills. Any team would be lucky to enjoy her as an ally, and becoming a part of the Guardians would grant Lady Hellbender some much-deserved screen time. Additionally, her membership in-game could provide Drax the Destroyer with a milestone to grow past the deaths of his wife and daughter. While Drax’s grief and pain begin to fade with time, and he begins to confront his demons, pursuing a romance with Lady Hellbender could free him from his past.

Though it’s likely attention won’t shift completely from the core characters of Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, the inclusion of new characters and an expansion of the GOTG universe is an exciting prospect. The MCU has largely restricted characters present in the Guardians’ storylines, but Marvel’s video games offer another path forward. Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy is available now on PlayStation, Xbox, PC, and Nintendo Switch. It’s currently unknown if Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy 2 will follow.
