A new Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy screenshot shows off an in-game skin that reflects Drax the Destroyer’s appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Eidos-Montréal’s upcoming sci-fi superhero title will put players in the jet-powered boots of Star-Lord as he leads the intergalactic team on an epic adventure. A recent preview of Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy gives fans a closer look at the single-player action title’s story and gameplay ahead of its release.

Unlike Marvel’s Avengers, another action title published by Square Enix and based on a Marvel Comics team, Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy is a strictly single-player experience. Rather than choosing between the team’s various different cosmic misfits, Star-Lord alone is controlled by the player. However, his status as the Guardians’ leader means that he can issue them orders in both combat scenarios and narrative moments. Peter Quill’s jet boots and elemental guns let him survey the battlefield and disrupt enemies, which can create an opening for his teammates to deal heavy damage. Making Star-Lord the only playable character allows Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy to be a heavily narrative-driven experience, as player choice can affect the plot in unique ways.

A recent tweet from Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy includes a look at a Marvel Cinematic Universe-inspired skin for Drax. The title is already said to include numerous different cosmetic skins for each member of the Guardians, inspired by their histories in comic books and other media. Drax’s MCU skin reflects Dave Bautista’s portrayal of the character in movies like Guardians of the Galaxy and Avengers: Infinity War, featuring distinctive grey skin and scar-like tattoos. While MCU-inspired skins for all five Guardians are expected to appear in the final game, Drax’s skin is the first one to be revealed.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has grown to become a massively beloved and influential movie franchise, with new installments planned for years in the future. This popularity has led many recent Marvel games, such as Marvel’s Spider-Man and Marvel’s Avengers, to include skins based on the characters’ live-action portrayals. Crystal Dynamics’ multiplayer action title Marvel’s Avengers recently added an Iron Man MCU skin which reflects the iconic armor worn in the character’s very first big-screen appearance. However, while Marvel’s Avengers requires players to spend real-world money to acquire skins, Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy has all cosmetic items unlocked through gameplay.

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy will include a multitude of skins, allowing players to customize Star-Lord and the rest of the Guardians team with classic comic designs and other adaptations. Marvel Cinematic Universe skins are frequently requested in modern Marvel games, due to the huge popularity of the live-action franchise. With Drax the Destroyer’s MCU skin accurately reflecting the design of Dave Bautista’s fast and boisterous brawler, it seems likely that the rest of the game’s skins will hit a similar level of accuracy.

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy will release on October 26, 2021 for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch and PC.
