Warning! Spoilers for New Fantastic Four #1 by Marvel Comics

Marvel Comics is bringing back one of its most beloved, short-lived superteams, revealing Wolverine and Hulk will be among the heroes starring in a New Fantastic Four series. On Wednesday, Marvel revealed that the unlikely Fantastic Four team from more than 30 years ago, featuring Wolverine, Hulk, Ghost Rider, and Spider-Man, are making a surprise return in the new miniseries from Peter David and Alan Robinson.

There have been many alternate versions of the Fantastic Four over the years, but few have captured readers’ attention as much as the New Fantastic Four, who first appeared in Walt Simonson and Arthur Adams’ Fantastic Four #347. In the two-issue arc, the Fantastic Four are captured by Skrulls, as Wolverine, Spider-Man, the Hulk, and Ghost Rider become a new version of the team to avenge the “deaths” of the heroes. While they have partly reformed on occasion, the four members of the New Fantastic Four were incredibly fun together as their different power levels made for an incredible team. Now, readers will see them in action once again.

On Wednesday, Marvel Comics revealed a new miniseries, New Fantastic Four, which will reassemble the iconic FF team from Simonson and Adams’ two-issue run from 1991. The new title, by Peter David and Alan Robinson, will feature Wolverine, Hulk (Joe Fixit), Ghost Rider, and Spider-Man coming together to investigate a series of violent outbreaks in Las Vegas. The solicit teases that the series will feature many guest stars, the original Fantastic Four team, and a series of surprising villains.

Peter David said that the alternate version of the Fantastic Four captured his attention when they first appeared and said he’s excited to bring the team back in a new series of fights, locations, enemies, and allies. Robinson, who’s making his Marvel Comics debut with the New Fantastic Four, said the project is a dream come true as he said it was a “total blast” to be working on big characters such as Wolverine and the Hulk and to draw the story alongside David.

Bringing the New Fantastic Four back might be a surprising choice, but it makes sense because the team’s roster features some of the coolest Marvel Comics heroes and is ripe for further exploration. The New Fantastic Four, featuring Spider-Man, Wolverine, Hulk, and Ghost-Rider, will return when the New Fantastic Four arrives in comic book stores on May 25, 2022.
