Warning! Potential spoilers for Phoenix Song: Echo by Marvel Comics below.

Marvel Comics’ newest Phoenix, Echo, is set to star in her own brand new series. This week, the publisher announced Phoenix Song: Echo, which continues the adventures of the current Avenger and will expand on her connection to the Phoenix Force. Written by Rebecca Roanhorse and Luca Maresca, the story will follow Echo’s transformation into one of Marvel’s most powerful heroes.

Marvel’s Phoenix Force is an ancient cosmic entity representing both death and rebirth that chooses a host to bestow its incredible powers upon. While the selected host gets immeasurable power, the Phoenix Force is quite volatile, as it can corrupt and turn them into the Dark Phoenix. In the current Avengers storyline, Earth’s Mightiest Heroes (and some villains) competed in a Phoenix Force tournament as the Phoenix sought a new host. In the end, the Native American hero Echo was named the winner, despite actually losing in the tournament – as the Phoenix chose her because of the pain she has suffered in her life.

It’s really refreshing to see Echo get her own series, as the character’s profile continues to rise at Marvel Comics. Echo will appear in the upcoming Hawkeye show, where she’ll be played by Alaqua Cox. Cox is also set to star in her own spinoff series in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Meanwhile, she’s also taken a prominent role in Jason Aaron’s and Javier Garron’s Avengers series, where she’s been elevated to the main team.

Phoenix Song: Echo looks like it’s going to be a fun, emotionally impactful series. Readers are ready to learn more about Maya Lopez and there’s no better time to give the character her own book ahead of her live-action debut in the MCU. Phoenix Song: Echois in comic book stores in October.
