There is a new team coming to Marvel’s universe with Thunderbolts #1 , with a roster of known heroes and fresh faces — including two new fighters in particular that classic comic fans won’t want to miss when the issue arrives in May 2022.

Writer Jim Zub and artist Sean Izaakse are returning to the Thunderbolts title spinning out of the Devil’s Reign event, and Wilson Fisk’s war on masked heroes. Many of the members who comprise this new incarnation of the Thunderbolts will be familiar to long-time fans, but two incredible throwback heroes are making their comics debut: Gutsen Glory and Eegro the Unbreakable.

Zub took over the Thunderbolts title from 2016-2017 which featured many of the original members. For his 2022 run of Thunderbolts Zub is calling up long-time Avenger Hawkeye. Clint Barton will be joined by America Chavez, Spectrum, a cyber-soldier classic throwback to the 90s, and an old-school Kirby-inspired behemoth. In an exclusive interview with Comicbook.com, Zub introduces his new Thunderbolts roster. In an intentional move to give readers something unexpected, Zub is grounding his heroes around New York City and they each will fulfill a specific role:

In the series, we talk a bit about these team roles as specific titles – the Leader, the Brick, the Mentalist, the Energy Slinger, titles like that. These are core roles we’ve seen countless times in superhero team line-ups, we’re just calling them out specifically as part of the team-building process. In terms of why the team is being put into place this way, all will be explained in issue #1.

Gutsen Glory and Eegro the Unbreakable, Zub and Izaakse’s newest creations, will be gracing the covers of Thunderbolts #1. The cover for Thunderbolts #2, Who is Eegro the Unbreakable? frames Eegro as an alpha-level threat to the city. Gutsen Glory is a throwback to the ’90s on the surface level with his high-tech gadgets and mysterious origins, while Eegro the Unbreakable is a nod to Jack Kirby’s horror-flick-inspired creations. His name and look give the monster comic tropes vibe and the cover for Thunderbolts #2 clarifies his artistic genesis.

Glory’s immense firepower is pitted against the brute force of Eegro, with the former getting the best of Eegro this round, but the cover for issue #2 might depict a round 2 for which the Thunderbolts team is unprepared. In the solicitation for Thunderbolts #2, it is stated that somehow Eegro’s powers will help the “superhero team battle their enemies and balance their budget.”

After cleaning up Wilson Fisk’s mess from the Devil’s Reign story arc, fans are promised unexpected villains and a greater threat to wrap up the 5-issue mini-series. Thunderbolts #1 goes on sale Wednesday, May 25, 2022.Source: Comicbook.com
