Warning! Spoilers for Black Cat Annual #1 by Marvel Comics below.

Black Cat’s latest mission has put her directly in the path of one of Marvel Comics’ strongest new heroes, Taegukgi. As the world-class thief prepares to head to Korea with the National Intelligence Service, she’s briefed about the South Korean hero. Taegukgi is revealed to be much stronger than previously believed, as Black Cat is told he’s on the same power level as both Sentry and Hyperion.

Earlier this year, Marvel Comics revealed Taegukgi, a new South Korean superhero who was part of the N.I.S.’s Tiger Division. Described as a “powerhouse,” Taegukgi was one of the latest Korean heroes to be introduced in the pages of Marvel Comics. He joins Silk, Luna Snow, Crescent, and White Fox among Korean heroes who have taken more prominent roles in the comics. While Taegukgi’s first matchup saw him come face-to-face with Taskmaster, his newest appearance reveals he’s under the control of a villain, who uses the ridiculously strong hero for their own nefarious deeds.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

In Black Cat Annual #1 (part of the Infinite Destinies crossover event) by Jed MacKay, Joey Vazquez, Brian Reber, and Ferran Delgado, Black Cat agrees to a mission with White Fox and the N.I.S. to clear her name with the organization. Felicia Hardy and White Fox head to the Republic of Korea, where the superhuman response team is tracking Taegukgi, one of their own heroes who’s been compromised. When describing Taegukgi’s powers, Black Cat calls him the “Korean Hyperion,” as well as comparing him to being on par as Blue Marvel and the Sentry.

Marvel clearly wanted to hype up how powerful Taegukgi is and chose the heaviest hitters in comics to emphasize his extreme powers. Comparing the Korean hero to Hyperion and Blue Marvel shows what kind of opponent Black Cat and White Fox is dealing with. Hyperion is effectively Marvel’s Superman, while Blue Marvel has unrivaled cosmic powers. However, saying Taegukgi is on par with the Sentry is a bit much. Sentry’s powers are intentionally so insane they can’t possibly be matched. Taegukgi is for sure a heavyweight, but saying he’s on the same level him to the man who has the power of a million exploding suns seems like a stretch.

In the end, Black Cat, White Fox, and the Tiger Division broke Taegukgi free from being mind-controlled. It’s a good thing too because the Korean hero is one of Marvel’s strongest characters – even if the comparison to the Sentry doesn’t add up – but to be fair, there’s still a lot to learn about the character. Black Cat Annual #1 is in comic book stores now.
