Unconfirmed leaks have revealed new details about the upcoming game Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 from Insomniac. The game, a sequel to the studio’s 2018 title Marvel’s Spider-Man and 2020’s Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales spinoff, takes place in a different continuity from any movie or comic versions of the character that have been released. The games are also unrelated to the upcoming Spider-Man DLC for Marvel’s Avengers. The 2018 Spider-Man release was well received, and featured a different Peter Parker than is usual for the franchise.

The Insomniac Spider-Man games have players take control of a more experienced Spider-Man who has already worn the mask for several years. By the time the first game starts he has already encountered many of his iconic villains like Kingpin and Vulture, although others like Venom and Green Goblin have only been hinted at so far. Miles Morales introduced the younger hero as a full protagonist, albeit one with far less experience than the original Spider-Man. The gameplay of the series is similar to that of Rocksteady’s Batman: Arkham series and allows players to use basic attacks and counters augmented by gadgets and powers from different Spider-Man suits.

The recent rumors, as reported by ComicBook, give details about both the story and gameplay of the upcoming title. One of the villains of the game was revealed to be Kraven the Hunter, a mercenary whose men will pursue Spider-Man throughout New York. Other potential foes include Lizard and Mysterio, although their relevance to the plot is still unknown. The leaks also suggest that Peter will acquire a Venom suit made by Oscorp early on, which will likely contribute to the bleaker tone of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2.

On the gameplay side, the leaks suggest that both Peter Parker and Miles Morales will be fully playable throughout the game, and that the character who is not chosen will become an AI ally during missions. Web slinging and traversal will be faster thanks to the improved tech of the PlayStation 5, and new options like web grappling will become available to players. It’s also suggested that wall climbing will feel smoother in the sequel than the original game.

No source has been confirmed for the rumors, and as of now they’re unsubstantiated. If they do turn out to be correct, however, the leaks reveal quite a bit about the upcoming game. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 has become hotly anticipated after the success of the first game, and a lot of the information in the leaks suggests that the sequel will expand greatly on its predecessor. The Spider-Man game series already has an impressive list of villains, and the inclusion of even more fan favorites along with gameplay improvements is a sure way for Insomniac to meet the sky-high expectations for the game.
