The visually impressive Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 announcement trailer was rendered completely in-engine and in real-time, according to lead visual effects artist Bryanna Lindsey. The latest installment of Insomniac’s critically acclaimed, PlayStation-exclusive superhero sandbox series was first unveiled during last Thursday’s PlayStation Showcase livestream after months of fan speculation.

This early showing of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 was an exciting one for fans of Insomniac’s previous Spider-Man-based titles, showing off the PlayStation 5’s graphical capabilities as Peter Parker and Miles Morales took to the streets to fend off some criminals as only a pair of spiders could. Things then took a dark turn as Venom emerged from a darkened alleyway, finally revealing himself after being hinted at in the post-credits scenes of both Marvel’s Spider-Man and Spider-Man: Miles Morales. The entire Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 trailer was a visual spectacle from beginning to end, so much so that most fans assumed it was all pre-rendered CGI given how early it was released – at least the ones who didn’t assume they were seeing a new Infamous game instead.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

A few days ago, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 lead VFX artist Bryanna Lindsey confirmed that this wasn’t the case. In a recent Twitter post, she praised the development team behind Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 for their hard work on Thursday’s PlayStation Showcase trailer, which she revealed was rendered in real-time using in-game assets. To demonstrate this, Lindsey shared a video by TigerCA123 comparing Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 trailer side by side with the one for last year’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, which was pre-rendered.

Aside from Venom’s confirmed involvement and a possible appearance by longtime Spider-Man baddie Kraven The Hunter, little is known about what Insomniac has in store for fans with Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 – though details are slowly coming forward. Venom voice actor and original Candyman star Tony Todd recently revealed that Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 will be “massive” in size, which is the reason it won’t be ready until 2023. Additionally, Insomniac confirmed that the new game will share a universe with Marvel’s Wolverine, which was also announced during Thursday’s PlayStation Showcase event.

Insomniac’s trailer for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 vowed viewers during the PlayStation Showcase, and the fact that it was rendered completely in real-time and in-engine makes it all the more impressive. If the eye-popping visuals shown during said trailer are any indication, fans will be in for some truly amazing graphics when Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 finally swings onto the PlayStation 5 in 2023.
