Potential spoilers for Marvel’s upcoming Heroes Reborn arc below!

Over the years, Marvel Comics has introduced a few characters who have been pastiches, satirical takes, and homages to the most iconic superhero ever, Superman – with the most iconic among them being Hyperion from the Squadron Supreme, and Gladiator of the Shi’ar Empire. Now, those two powerful heroes are teaming up in an origin story for Marvel’s upcoming Heroes Reborn arc.

Marvel’s new take on Heroes Reborn will take place in a world where the Avengers never existed. Wakanda is known only as a myth, Captain America was never unfrozen from ice, Thor has become a hard-drinking Athiest who has a hatred for hammers, and Tony Stark was never trapped in a cave. Elsewhere in this new world, villains have merged such as Doctor Doom and Juggernaut, Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver, while Thanos wields the Infinity Rings. Even Marvel’s Champions including Ms. Marvel and Spider-Man have all-new costumes (and origins). Only one hero, Blade, the last living vampire on Earth, knows all about the changes in the universe.

Hyperion, a pastiche of Superman with similar powers and origin, and Gladiator, an homage to the hero who inspired Superman – whose name just happens to be Kallark (similar to Kal-El/Clark) – are both starring in the one-shot Heroes Reborn: Hyperion & the Imperial Guard. The one-shot, revealed exclusively to CBR.com, will star a teenage Hyperion and teaming-up with his cosmic Shi’Ar friends. However, when a mission to the Negative Zone goes awry, Hyperion, Gladiator, and the rest of the Imperial Guard will encounter horrors that will be “beyond their wildest nightmares.”

The series creative team is Ryan Cady, Michele Mandini, with covers from Chris Sprouse and a variant cover from Ben Caldwell. Cady told CBR.com that the one-shot will embrace the metafiction of the new world, saying readers will feel like they’ve been “reading issues of Hyperion and the Imperial Guard your entire life.” The book will also feature a sneak peek of a brand new spinoffs Starjammers series.

Seeing both Hyperion and Gladiator team up with the rest of the Imperial Guard makes the one-shot a can’t-miss issue. Both heroes are insanely powerful and seeing them fight side-by-side against the horrors from the Negative Zone (the cover looks like the villains could be Broods, but that hasn’t been confirmed) is a welcome chapter to the Marvel Universe – even if that universe is much different from one reader are used to. Heroes Reborn: Hyperion & the Imperial Guard is set to hit comic book stores in May 2021.
