The Masked Singer‘s Bull, revealed to be Todrick Hall, explained why he wanted to keep his costume. In the finale, Bull charged onto the stage as a frontrunner for Group A, going head-to-head with Group B champion, Queen of Hearts. Although he came in second to Queen of Hearts, who was unmasked and revealed to be Jewel, the singer, dancer, and YouTube star won the heart of the audience and will now keep his costume as a souvenir.

The Bull costume was a furry, brown bull with commanding horns, green eyes, and a gold nose ring. He wore a red matador costume with gold decorations with a red cape with a purple interior. The costume had many gold tassels that moved as Todrick danced. He was especially impressive as he danced in the costume, moving freely and even doing splits during his routines, a feat that would be difficult in regular clothes, never mind a full Bull costume.

In an interview with ET, Todrick explained why he wanted to keep his costume. He said, “I begged the producers, over and over, to get the costume. And I don’t mean to make all the other contestants before me jealous, but I am going to be the first person ever from The Masked Singer to get to keep their costume.” This is remarkable because the costumes on the show take a lot of time and energy to make, and are often used in museum exhibits. The series has even won two Emmy Awards for Outstanding Costumes for a Variety, Nonfiction, or Reality Program. Todrick also revealed that he has a costume collection of his own, including Kristin Chenoweth’s Glinda costume and Idina Menzel’s original Elphaba costume from Wicked. He also has all of the costumes he has ever worn on Broadway, sharing, “It’s kind of my thing. When I do a show, I negotiate that I get to keep whatever I wear. So this is going to go into the library or museum of Todrick Hall’s Incredible Costumes.”

Todrick had another reason for wanting to keep the costume. It was because of all that it symbolized for him. When he looked at Bull, he thought, “This guy has a story he wants to tell and he’s not what people think he is by looking at him.” Todrick loved the idea that when people first saw the costume, they “probably thought it was going to be some straight man who was gonna sing Bruno Mars songs or something, and I was singing Britney Spears’ ‘Circus.’ So the juxtaposition of this muscular costume and then doing the splits and singing ‘Rain on Me’ by Lady Gaga, I just fell in love with that.” Todrick explained that he was drawn to the Bull costume because it allowed him to break down stereotypes. He explained, “I think that people expect a bull to have a very hard exterior.” People think that Todrick is overly confident, but that is not the case because he was bullied in school. He said that he had to learn to project confidence so that people wouldn’t try to tear him down.

He continued, “I think that, with bulls, people forget they have feelings. They expect them to come out and charge into a red cape… and that they are so powerful [they can’t be hurt.]” Todrick added that Bull also reminded him of The Beast from Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, who appears frightening on the outside, but is actually loving and kind. He explained that as he looked at the Bull, he thought, “This guy has a story he wants to tell and he’s not what people think he is by looking at him.”

Todrick had a very successful run on The Masked Singer as Bull, and will now have the costume as a remembrance. Bull symbolized everything Todrick wanted to be: strong, yet sensitive, empowered, but not intimidating. Through his singing and dancing, he broke new ground on the show. As Bull, Todrick fought his way to the top and achieved greatness.
