Nick Lachey came out victorious as Piglet on The Masked Singer season 5 after joining the cast only four days before filming commenced. Despite being contacted at the last minute by producers, the 98 Degrees singer was all for dressing up in the adorable costume, spinning propeller hat and all. Appearing on the show with minimal notice had its challenges, but Nick won over hearts with his powerful vocals and charming piggy antics.

In an exciting season of plot twists, including the addition of several wild card contestants like Mark McGrath as Orca, Nick/Piglet soared through the competition week after week. He regularly brought the panel of celebrity judges to tears with his moving renditions of songs like “7 Years” by Lukas Graham. Nick also had them smiling as he gave Piglet cute mannerisms, which included nervously shaking his knees during each elimination round. In the grand finale, Nick won the coveted Golden Mask Trophy over artist JoJo, who performed flawlessly as Black Swan.

On the heels of his victory, Nick reflected on his Masked Singer experience and what it was like to join the show with minimal notice. He shared with EW that he was originally slated to appear on season 2, but couldn’t due to other obligations. Ever since, the opportunity remained in the back of his mind, as well as his children’s, who are avid viewers. Nick got the long-awaited call while on a ski trip in Colorado. “They said, ‘Hey, we need somebody to be a part of this season. Would you want to do it? It’s like in four days.’ So I said yes and jumped right in. They presented me with the Piglet costume and I flew back and we went kind of right into it, which was exciting. So that worked out. I’ve always wanted to do the show, so even a last minute call was a welcome one.”

Although his choice in costume was limited to Piglet, Nick had no problem with it. “I’m from Cincinnati, the City of the Flying Pigs, and they call it Porkopolis, and my production company is Flying Pig Productions … I kind of took that as a sign like, all right, this is definitely supposed to happen,” he said. Nick made the character his own after receiving advice from NSYNC’s Joey Fatone, who told him to give Piglet “a personality and have fun with it.” While Nick didn’t expect the costume to be so claustrophobic, he’s proud of himself for making it work. He also can’t wait for his kids, who are in the process of watching the season, to see their father’s big reveal. “That’s part of the reason I did it, because my kids were so into the show,” Nick said. “Anything you can do that your kids enjoy, at this point, that makes it worthwhile.”

Piglet follows in the footsteps of other powerhouse Masked Singer winners like LeAnn Rimes as Sun and Wayne Brady as The Fox. For most participants, regardless of whether they win or lose, The Masked Singer serves as an opportunity to get out of their comfort zone and try something brand new. According to Nick, it was one of the most “special and unique and strange” experiences he ever had. But he loved every second and made Piglet bring the Golden Mask Trophy all the way home.
