The Happy Ending Mod for Mass Effect Legendary Edition is now live on PC, allowing players to experience the best ending for Commander Shepard. BioWare’s Mass Effect trilogy shut the door on Commander Shepard’s spacefaring saga nearly a decade ago, but the series received a new lease on life last year courtesy of the aforementioned Legendary Edition. The remastered collection greatly improved the visual fidelity and performance of each game, effectively reigniting interest in the space odyssey.

Mass Effect 3’s ending remains a point of contention amongst fans, particularly those who invested in the series from the start. Many felt as though their choices didn’t matter; others expressed disappointment in some side characters and secondary plots from previous entries not receiving their due. BioWare attempted to rectify a few missteps by deploying Extended Cut DLC that added new scenes and offered more closure for Commander Shepard. Approximately 10 years later, some still believe BioWare failed to deliver on its promise.

As spotted by Wccftech, PC modder Audemus uploaded Audemus’ Happy Ending Mod for Mass Effect Legendary Edition on Nexus Mods a few days ago. (Mild spoilers ahead for Mass Effect 3.) The stated purpose of the ME3 mod is to “allow Commander Shepard to survive the final mission…” Audemus further wanted to provide “satisfying closure” by tweaking cutscenes, adding new ending slides, and reworking the memorial scene. One example of such efforts manifests in the mod’s “lore-friendly narrative” that rids The Crucible of its space-magic qualities and better explains how only the Reapers succumb to its effects. Mass Effect Legendary Edition’s Happy Ending Mod additionally boasts an expanded epilogue and ensures the continued health of The Citadel and Mass Relays.

The Happy Ending Mod seems to serve as somewhat of a reimagined Extended Cut, one that required fans to assume the herculean task of scripting lore-friendly rewrites. Players must judge the merit of such a project for themselves upon playing the experience.

Mass Effect Legendary Edition hit store shelves in May 2021, packing in all three games and their respective DLC releases save for the Pinnacle Station content. Presently, franchise faithful patiently await more news about the next Mass Effect entry, which has only received a teaser trailer and artwork, thus far. One such tease suggests the new Mass Effect will revisit the trilogy narrative in some respect.
