The team behind Master of None explain the massive change to the upcoming third season. Master of None is returning for a season 3 at Netflix after a four-year absence. The first two seasons followed the journey of struggling actor, Dev Shah, played by Aziz Ansari, who co-created the series alongside Alan Yang. The series also starred Eric Wareheim, Kelvin Yu, and Lena Waithe as Dev’s friends, with Noël Wells and Alessandra Mastronardi playing Dev’s romantic interests.

The show became a critical and audience favorite, winning a Golden Globe Award and two Emmy Awards. At the time of the second season drop on Netflix, Ansari was skeptical about doing another season, commenting that he was not sure if he had any more stories to tell about Dev’s life, which is based on Ansari. When season 3 was announced, many expected the show to return back to the main character of Dev, but the creators had a different idea in mind. Instead of focusing on Dev, Masters of None season 3 will be centered on Waithe’s character Denise.

In an interview for Deadline’s Contenders Television awards-season event, the creators and the stars of Master of None explained their reasoning behind the change in shift. Masters on None season 3 is titled Moments in Love and will have only a mere five episodes, featuring Denise’s marriage to another woman and their journey towards having a child. Ansari directed and co-wrote the season with Waithe and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker actress Naomi Ackie will be playing Denise’s spouse, Alicia. The team stated that they wanted to do a romance that revolved around Denise and highlight a love story through a lesbian couple of color, but the narrative will still be part of the theme and atmosphere of the series. Ansari commented:

“If you look back at any of the old interviews Alan and I did in Season 2, I think we were both pretty clear we didn’t really want to do the show again if it was the same kind of show. We kind of exhausted what we wanted to say about me being a guy in my 30s and single in New York and eating food and running around.”

Master of None season 2 ended on an open note with Dev and his love interest, Francesca, lying on a bed together, looking at each other with unease, and Francesca seen not wearing a ring after getting engaged to her boyfriend. While it may be disappointing that the third season will not focus on Dev and give a definitive conclusion to his story, it will be refreshing to see the themes of the series reflected through a completely different point of view. One of the show’s most memorable episodes also centered on Denise when she came out to her mother, and it won Waithe and Ansari the Emmy for writing.

Master of None has always addressed the heartfelt and devastating human moments in life and romantic relationships that mostly stem from true stories of the writers and creators. Ansari definitely lived up to his previous statement about hinting to do something different when he brought back the series, but many did not believe it would be to this degree. Gven the show’s acclaim, it’s likely many will embrace this new storytelling approach when Master of None season 3 releases on Netflix on May 23.
