New images released for The Matrix Resurrections confirm who Jonathan Groff will be playing in the upcoming film. It’s been over 20 years since The Matrix premiered and changed the science-fiction genre forever. It was that first film written and directed by the Wachowskis which introduced the world to Neo, “the One” destined to free humanity from the machines, and to Agent Smith, a sentient program set on stopping him. The Matrix‘s huge success led to two sequels, Reloaded and Revolutions, as well as comic book and video game spinoffs which continue its story.

This month, a fourth entry premieres in the epic sci-fi franchise, The Matrix Resurrections. Resurrections is co-written and directed by Lana Wachowski, and several cast members from the previous films will return for their roles, such as Keanu Reeves as Neo and Carrie-Anne Moss as Trinity. Resurrections will also introduce new characters, like the one played by Jessica Henwick. Some cast members were confirmed for the film without revealing the roles they would be playing, like Groff. With the two trailers released over the past few months, fans could build an idea of how the fourth installment of The Matrix series will go, but not who all the new faces were, until now.

This week, Warner Bros. released new images from The Matrix Resurrections which attaches names to the new characters and confirms a popular fan theory. Images from the release uploaded by Screen Crush confirm that Groff will be playing Agent Smith in the newest Matrix film. Many fans will not be surprised that Groff is Neo’s long-time enemy in the new film. The second trailer for Resurrections had led many to believe that Groff would be playing Smith, because it cut between footage of Hugo Weaving in the first Matrix film and him. This set of images was an expected reveal. The recent confirmation of Groff’s role and the other information this new set of images reveals are sure to hype those eagerly waiting for the film’s premiere.

The Matrix was an undeniably important film, and as its third sequel, The Matrix Resurrections has been highly anticipated. Now that Groff is confirmed as Agent Smith, speculation can begin. The biggest question after this recent reveal is if Groff and Reeves’ dynamic as Smith and Neo will be the same as when Weaving played the agent program. Groff definitely has big expectations to face stepping into Smith’s role in this series, and there will be many claiming he can’t replace Weaving. The only way to find the answer to both questions is to return to the Matrix.
