After going a year without any Marvel Cinematic Universe big-screen movies, the MCU relaunched with Phase 4 and Black Widow as the first movie of 2021 before being followed up by two introductions. The first is Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, followed by The Eternals.

This is a chance for the MCU to create some new heroes to carry the MCU into the future. When it comes to Shang-Chi, the movie promises to finally introduce the long-awaited villain The Mandarin, after Marvel only teased in Iron Man 3, as well as a whole new group of Marvel characters making their MCU debuts.

9 Simu Liu / Shang-Chi

Simu Liu plays the title character Shang-Chi, the Asian warrior trained to become an assassin by his father, only to refused to take that path in life. There is a huge change in the movie from the comics. In the comics, Fu Manchu was Shang-Chi’s father, but in the movie, his father is instead Wenwu, the Marvel villain known as The Mandarin.

Shang-Chi is a martial arts master who is in tune with the chi of all living beings, making him the greatest martial artist with no superpowers in Marvel Comics. Before this, Liu was mostly a television actor, the lead in Blood and Water and Kim’s Convenience.

8 Awkwafina / Katy

The first trailer for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings showed the comedic stylings of Awkwafina, who stars in the movie as Katy. In the trailer, Katy and Shang-Chi met on a bus during an attack by the villain, Razor Fist. Katy is described as a hotel valet and close friend of Shang-Chi who knows nothing about his past life. Awkwafina said that Katy has “a real heart, and she has a loyalty and dedication to her friendship with Shang-Chi.” Awakafina is best known for The Farewell and Jumanji: The Next Level.

7 Tony Leung / The Mandarin

After the Marvel Cinematic Universe pulled the rug out from under the fans with The Mandarin in Iron Man 3, the villain finally makes his official debut appearance in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. This time around, the legendary Tony Leung stars as Mandarin, who also happens to be Shang-Chi’s father in the movie.

Leung has starred in some Hong Kong classics, including Chungking Express, Hard Boiled, and Infernal Affairs, the movie Martin Scorsese remade as The Departed.

6 Michelle Yeoh / Jiang Nan

Hong Kong acting legend Michelle Yeoh plays Jiang Nan in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. Best known for her roles in the James Bond movie Tomorrow Never Dies and the Oscar-nominated Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Yeoh previously appeared in a Marvel Cinematic Universe movie as Aleta Ogord in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. She was part of Stakar Ogord’s (Sylvester Stallone) team of Ravagers.

5 Fala Chen / Jiang Li

Fala Chen also joined Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings as the character of Jiang Li. The character remains unknown, as none of the announced characters are straight out of Shang-Chi’s Marvel comics, at least not by name. There are rumors that Jiang Li is actually a version of Lelko Wu, an M16 agent who is the girlfriend of Shang-Chi in the comics. She was his door to the real world after years of training as a child.

4 Meng’er Zhang / Xialing

Meng’er Zhang stars as Xialing, Shang-Chi’s estranged sister in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. This means that the actress is playing the movie version of Fah Lo Suee. Since she is the daughter of Fu Manchu, Marvel changed the character and relationship to Mandarin. In the comics, Fah Lo Suee became a full-fledged member of Fu Manchu’s criminal organization, so Xialing is likely to do with same with The Mandarin.

3 Florian Munteanu / Razor Fist

Florian Munteanu plays a villain straight out of Marvel Comics called Razor-Fist. This is a martial artist named Douglas Scott, a mercenary who has often battled Shang-Chi in Marvel Comics. He has blades on both hands that he uses as weapons.

Razor-Fist has steel blades coming out of both arms after Colleen Wing cut off both his arms in the comics. However, as the Shang-Chi trailer showed, these blades are more than steel and are made out of some type of energy.

2 Ronny Chieng / Jon Jon

Ronny Chieng from The Daily Show has signed on to appear in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings as a character named Jon Jon. The comedian’s character is not someone from the comics, but the character might exist to lead some comedic moments to the martian arts Marvel action movie. Chieng also appeared recently in Crazy Rich Asians as Eddie Cheng, Nick’s (Henry Golding) cousin from Hong Kong.

1 Unknown / Death Dealer

There is another villain from the Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings trailer that will play a large part in the movie. This is Death Dealer, and there is no word on who is under the mask, neither the actor nor the character’s real name. In the comics, Li Ching-Lin is Death Dealer, a Chinese operative with dark ties. In the trailer, he works for The Mandarin, and the fact his identity has not been revealed makes it sound like there might be a surprise reveal in the movie.
