Iron Man’s life came to an end in Avengers: Endgame after serving as the character that launched the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but how old was he when he died? Robert Downey Jr. portrayed the genius playboy philanthropist since 2008’s Iron Man, which marked his first foray under his superhero moniker. In Phase 1 of the MCU alone, Tony Stark was the focus of two solo films, and the figure continued to steer the franchise toward monumental success. In total, Downey played the role of Iron Man for 11 franchise installments, proving that he truly was the driving force behind the series up until his heroic death.

As one of the original Avengers, Tony and his technological and scientific knowledge were integral to the team’s efforts in protecting the planet. When looking back at Tony’s journey as Iron Man, he may have had one of the most remarkable arcs thus far in the MCU. Before using his powers for good, the CEO of Stark Industries was more focused on money and fame. Tony served as the chief weapons manufacturer for the U.S. military until his change of perception led him to build weaponized suits to defend the world. Though he was still a bit egocentric, he constantly put his life on the line for others. Tony also learned to put his differences aside for the greater good, such as his conflict with Steve Rogers before and after Captain America: Civil War.

While Tony was ready to face Thanos head-on in Avengers: Infinity War, the Mad Titan got the best of him and the rest of his allies. Failing wasn’t an option for Iron Man, so he felt an immense sense of guilt in the years after Thanos’ Snap. Despite being reluctant at first, Tony agreed to lead a time travel heist to obtain the Infinity Stones with a plan to reverse Thanos’ massacre. The plan worked in Endgame, but following the use of the new Infinity Gauntlet, Thanos brought the war to the Avengers Compound. After a tumultuous battle, Tony had no choice but to transfer the Infinity Stones to his own Iron Man armor. Upon decimating Thanos and his army in 2023, Tony succumbed to his injuries sustained from using the Stones, causing him to pass away at the age of 53. While Tony’s sacrifice was tragic, there was no doubt that he lived a full life considering how much he accomplished by the time he reached 50-years-old.

Endgame reveals Tony was born on May 29, 1970 because his mom was said to be pregnant when Tony and Steve traveled back to a S.H.I.E.L.D. facility to retrieve the Space Stone. By age 17, Tony was the youngest Fortune 500 CEO in history. Sadly, Tony became an orphan just four years later after the deaths of his parents. He turned his focus to inventing weapon technology, but he also became a party boy. Thankfully, Tony matured over the next few decades, especially after becoming Iron Man.

Early on in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it looked like Tony didn’t plans to settle down. That changed after he fell in love with Pepper Potts. Following the events of Infinity War, the pair officially got married and had a daughter, Morgan Stark. By the time Tony became a father, he was in his late 40s. Unfortunately, he didn’t get to stick around to watch her grow up, but it will be interesting to see how she carries on the family legacy now that Iron Man is no longer around.
