Among the many storylines the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Phase 4 can explore is King in Black, and this universe already has a connection to it thanks to the villain in Thor: Love and Thunder. After reaching its peak with Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, the MCU closed the Infinity Saga with Spider-Man: Far From Home, but that isn’t the end of this connected universe. Phase 4 will introduce new characters and continue the stories of previously introduced heroes, as is the case of Thor (Chris Hemsworth).

After establishing New Asgard on Earth and joining the rest of the MCU heroes in the Battle of Earth, Thor will return in a fourth solo movie titled Thor: Love and Thunder, which will also see the return of other characters from the Infinity Saga, as are the Guardians of the Galaxy and Jane Foster (Natalie Portman). The latter is expected to take on the mantle of the Mighty Thor as she did in the comics, and in addition to that, they will come across a new villain with a lot of power and who can bring a lot of chaos to the MCU: Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale), who has connections with a specific storyline that Marvel fans want to see in the MCU.

Said storyline is King in Black, an event written by Donny Cates with art by Ryan Stegman and which began its run in December 2020. In it, the main villain of the story, Knull, brought back the All-Black a.k.a. Necrosword after it was destroyed by King Thor. All-Black is the first symbiote, manifested from the shadow of the evil deity Knull and tempered using the divine power of a slain Celestial. All-Black’s preferred form was that of a sword and was thus wielded by Knull on many occasions, including when he decapitated a Celestial, which led to Knul’s exile. During a battle against a group of gods in golden armors, All-Black left Knull and bonded to Gorr, who followed Knull’s destructive and chaotic steps and used the Necrosword to slay Gods across the cosmos, giving him the title “God Butcher”.

During that quest to kill every God out there, Gorr came across Thor (and his past and future selves), and All-Black bonded with the God of Thunder at one point. Although at this point it’s unknown if Gorr will wield the Necrosword in Thor: Love and Thunder or not, his introduction in the MCU is a good set-up for the King in Black storyline in the near future, thus also bringing Knull into the mix. Bringing the Necrosword and Knull to the MCU can also make way for the highly-anticipated crossover with Sony’s Venom, given Knull’s place as the creator of the symbiotes and his role in the King in Black event, which is all about his arrival to Earth as he was looking to take control of Venom again, eventually ripping the symbiote off Eddie.

The MCU’s Phase 4 is on its way to bring the King in Black storyline to the big screen unless it has other plans for this new wave of content that don’t include bringing Knull and company to the MCU yet. Whether fans will get to see Gorr the God Butcher wielding the Necrosword in Thor: Love and Thunder or not is unknown, but it’s an excellent step towards adapting King in Black.
