Nick Fury helped assemble the Avengers, but the former director of SHIELD and the world’s institutions may not be prepared for the arrival of the new heroes of MCU Phase 5. More than a decade after Iron Man‘s post-credits scene, Fury has been through enough to secure three or four retirements. Even so, there’s still more waiting for the character, including having to deal with people as complicated as Tony Stark was.

The next step in Fury’s MCU story will be Secret Invasion, the Disney+ series that will adapt the comic book saga of the Skrull infiltration on Earth. Secret Invasion promises to dive into the Skrull lore following the interesting take that Captain Marvel took on the shapeshifters, and could show more of Fury’s newest hobby: the S.W.O.R.D. In addition to the Skrull conspiracy, new threats will emerge in the MCU from Phase 5 onwards — followed by the inevitable arrival of new heroes.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Nick Fury’s fear of super-powered beings, especially aliens, which pose a threat to Earth made him assemble the Avengers and use the Tesseract to build weapons. At this point, half of the Avengers’ members didn’t sign the Sokovia Accords. Soon, Fury and the world’s institutions will have to deal with a new family of super-powered beings. There will also be a non-governmental organization that gathers and trains mutants under the orders of a single man, who also happens to be the world’s most powerful telepath.

Even though the Avengers disassociated themselves from SHIELD at the end of The Avengers, there was a sense that the Earth’s Mightiest Heroes were the most reliable for the governments of the world to count on. The point of maximum tension between superheroes and institutions was shown in Captain America: Civil War, but that was pretty much it. If the Avengers’ split over signing the Sokovia Accords was enough to cause so much turmoil in the world, the arrival of two new major players like the Fantastic Four and the X-Men has the potential to be even more problematic.

Unlike the Avengers, the Fantastic Four and the X-Men are closer to operating as families than as an organization. Yet, they have the firepower to rival the world’s greatest armies. Not only that, people like Reed Richards and Charles Xavier aren’t used to taking orders and prefer being the ones calling the shots. MCU’s version of the Illuminati in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which will feature a version of Professor Xavier, will already be an example of that.

After a decade of dealing with just the Avengers, Nick Fury will have to learn how to work with the Fantastic Four, the X-Men, and the rest of the mutants in MCU Phase 5. The end of the Infinity Saga closed many of the MCU storylines, but the Marvel Universe in the comics still has a lot more to offer. It remains to be seen how long it will take for the regular people, the Avengers, the Fantastic Four, and the X-Men to learn to work together.
