MCU Star Was Blocked On Instagram For “Spoiling” Hawkeye Episode 4 Ending

Black Widow star Florence Pugh was reportedly blocked on Instagram for “spoiling” her appearance near the end of Hawkeye episode 4. Pugh has cultivated an impressive filmography via roles in Lady Macbeth, Fighting with My Family, Midsommar, and Little Women — which earned her an Oscar nomination. Earlier this year, she made her MCU debut in Cate Shortland’s Black Widow as Yelena Belova, Natasha Romanoff’s surrogate sister, and fellow Red Room widow. In addition to being a standout of that film, the Black Widow post-credits scene saw Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) lead Yelena to believe Clint Barton/Hawkeye was responsible for Natasha’s death, setting him up as her next target.

Marvel Studios’ latest Disney+ series, Hawkeye, picks up with Clint in New York City two years after Avengers: Endgame. Following Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld) haphazardly dons the Ronin persona, she and Clint must work together to fight off the Tracksuit Mafia, Echo (Alaqua Cox), and a vengeful assassin so that Clint can make it home in time for Christmas. In Hawkeye episode 4, a masked figure attacks Clint, and then Kate and Echo, on a rooftop. At the end of the episode, this Black Widow assassin is revealed to be Yelena — something only the audience knows. As news of Yelena’s arrival spread across the internet, Pugh posted pictures of her Hawkeye scene along with the caption “…She’s here.”

On Wednesday night, Pugh revealed via her Instagram story that she’d be “blocked” on Instagram for “spoiling” her appearance in Hawkeye before fans got the chance to see the episode. It’s not entirely clear what this means, however Pugh is presumably temporarily unable to make new posts on her account (outside of stories). Check out a screenshot of Pugh’s story below:

Pugh’s role in Hawkeye was confirmed late last year before Black Widow was released in theaters or dropped on Disney+. On top of that, Yelena’s episode 4 debut was already heavily teased in Hawkeye’s promo last week, and it would be an understatement to say many weren’t surprised by her unmasking. While Marvel fans try their best to avoid spoilers until they’ve seen the episode, some may have been caught off guard by Pugh’s post, since those who follow Pugh on social media have likely seen Black Widow. Suffice to say, most people were aware the actress was showing up in Hawkeye, especially since Yelena was trending on Twitter after the episode aired, which spoiled her appearance for many much earlier than the post by Pugh herself.

Ironically, droves of people online seem to be determined to unearth spoilers/leaks regarding Spider-Man: No Way Home and other upcoming Marvel projects. When actual spoilers do appear online months before a movie or TV show becomes available to the public, they’ve often been celebrated. Pugh’s Instagram blocking exemplifies the Internet’s occasional proclivity for hypocrisy, toxicity and, perhaps, a growing problem with social media. Most fans probably didn’t have a problem with Pugh’s post, and it’s possible that only one or two people complained. Regardless, viewers are extremely excited to see how Yelena’s Hawkeye role plays out now that she’s officially out in the open.
