Since Marvel’s Phase 4 began, fans have been gifted with a number of new costumes, most of which are extremely colorful and comic-accurate, in contrast to the more ‘realistic’ costumes from the first 3 phases. Between their movies and TV shows, there have been 20 new hero costumes introduced so far, and even more to come!

Comic accuracy, moveability, and wow factor are all important qualifications for a new costume, and fans certainly have a lot of thoughts about which costumes are the best. While Marvel hasn’t let viewers down yet with any of their new costumes, some are better than others and are worth celebrating.

10 Black Widow (Natasha Romanoff)

Natasha wears a white suit for the first time in Black Widow, a contrast to the usual black color scheme. This suit is practical and helps to keep Natasha covered, a nice change from the usual over-sexualized costumes female heroes are often given.

However, by the end of the movie, she is back in black with a new outfit made for style and functionality.  For the first time, she had gear with gold accents, which is a nod to the comic book version of her traditional costume. Her new costume was practical, maybe having learned a thing or two from Yelena, and makes her look as strong and capable as she has consistently proven herself to be.

9 Hawkeye (Clint Barton)

After being in the MCU from near the beginning, Hawkeye finally has a comic-accurate costume. All it took was a group of excited LARPers and branding expert slash partner Kate Bishop to finally get Clint into a version of the purple costume fans know and love.

Hawkeye‘s version draws most heavily from Matt Fraction’s and David Aja’s 2015 Hawkeye version, with the purple V on the chest surrounded by mostly standard tactical gear. It’s a good blend of Clint’s practicality with Kate’s desire for wow factor.

8 Black Widow (Yelena Belova)

Yelena and Natasha both wear white tactical suits in Black Widow, but Yelena covers hers with her vest, which was the first item of clothing she was able to buy herself after acquiring free will. The suit itself is practical and strong, allowing Yelena to move easily and blend into the snow.

In addition, the suit is intended to look more like practical army wear than a superhero costume, because Yelena doesn’t see herself as a superhero. In one of Yelena’s best Black Widow quotes, she mocks Natasha for the habits she picked up as a member of the Avengers, so it makes sense for her costume to be all about functionality, rather than flair.

7 Thena

Thena’s costume is all gold, which is a risk with her platinum hair. The suit could easily become dull in comparison to more dynamic costumes in The Eternals, but because it matches the character’s powers, the costume actually does a good job of showing where the powers come from and honoring them.

The costume is also truthful to the comic’s interpretation, only lacking the red cape which would be great at making the character stand out, but wouldn’t fit well with the rest of the Eternals’ costume designs, which are largely similar to each other.

6 Spider-Man (Peter Parker)

In No Way Home, after the world forgets about Peter Parker, fans get to see Spider-man in the state they are most used to in comics and film interpretations – short of money and working on his own, rather than being an Avenger and Tony Stark’s prized protege.  Along with this change in station, audiences see a new suit, since Peter can no longer wear one of the Stark suits he was given.

Unlike the flashy suits from earlier in the MCU, Peter is now in a hand-sewn costume in the traditional red and blue. This is a downgrade technologically from what audiences have seen before but may prove to be a return to form for what fans love about the Friendly Neighborhood Spiderman.

5 Hawkeye (Kate Bishop)

Clint isn’t the only Hawkeye to get a new costume. Kate Bishop gets her own look too, a more colorful take on Clint’s outfit. While Clint’s costume has mostly darker colors for stealth purposes, Kate’s costume embraces her showy nature, with the whole top being a bright purple that draws attention to “one of the best archers in the world.”

Although her pants are darker than in the comics, her costume is pretty accurate to the most recent iterations of her character, where she wears practical clothes with distinctive purple coloring, making it one of the things Hawkeye got right about Kate Bishop. The only real difference is that Hawkeye‘s portrayal shows less skin, covering her completely rather than having sections showing, as her comic version usually does.

4 Shang-Chi

Shang-Chi’s outfit is the perfect blend of comic accuracy and realism, taking the color scheme and form of the comics and transforming them into a dignified, moveable, and stunning costume.

The costume shows Shang-Chi’s blended origins, with the combination of ornate decorations and tennis shoes. The sleeves are the perfect length to display his wrists as he collects the ten rings, and to be practical for both the actor and the character.

3 Sylvie

While Loki didn’t get a consistent look in his new show, the aptly named Loki, his female variant Sylvie did, creating a new costume for cosplayers to eagerly re-create. She is a combination of the comics’ Enchantress and Lady Loki, and Sylvie’s detailed costume in Loki is a blend of the two, with her broken crown harkening back to Lady Loki and the conjoined circle patterns on her outfit referring back to the Enchantress.

In addition, there are bits of Loki’s earlier MCU costumes woven throughout, which connect to her variant status. Altogether, the look is a great blending of Loki and Sylvie’s comic inspirations.

2 The Scarlet Witch (Wanda Maximoff)

Wanda Maximoff has had a variety of different costumes over the course of her time in the MCU, but none holds a candle to her new Scarlett Witch outfit that debuted in WandaVision. Insider reports that the outfit comes partially at actress Elizabeth Olsen’s request after she asked for a costume that was more practical and less cleavage-showing than many she has worn so far.

Despite worries that a costume fitting that description might be boring, Wanda’s newest costume is stunning, featuring the comic accurate crown and a powerful new suit. When Wanda comes into her power and takes on the new costume, there is no doubt that she is one of the most powerful and visually-impactful characters the MCU has ever seen.

1 Captain America (Sam Wilson)

After taking the entire series to decide what being Captain America means and whether or not Sam is ready to take on that mantle, viewers finally see Sam in all his Captain America glory. The suit is clearly inspired by the original and by the American flag, with the familiar red, white, and blue color scheme, but there are two major differences.

First, the suit’s predominant color is white, not blue, which pops in a very comic book way, differentiates him from the Captain America iterations that came before him, and accentuates his skin color as he deals with what it means to be a Black Captain America. Secondly, the suit features a set of America-themed wings, which honors his origins as the Falcon and allows him to really make the Captain America position his own, rather than trying to fill the shoes Steve left. Altogether, the look is stunning and leaves an impression in fans’ memories that won’t soon be forgotten.
