A side-by-side comparison of MCU films shows the difference between Disney+’s IMAX Enhanced version versus the previously released videos with the 4K aspect ratio. On Disney+ Day last Nov. 12, the streaming platform released 13 Marvel titles in their IMAX’s expanded aspect ratio versions as a special treat for its subscribers. These include fan-favorite films such as Iron Man, Captain America: Civil War, Doctor Strange, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: EndgameNewer films such as Black Widow and Shang Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings are also part of the list.

With this, fans can enjoy IMAX’s features at home and get a more immersive viewing experience. Its expanded aspect ratio is 1:90:1, offering up to 26% more picture size. This means each scene will show a wider background that viewers did not get to see in ordinary theaters or even in the DVDs with a 4K aspect ratio. Additionally, the new Disney+ feature has better audio quality provided by DTS. It allows longtime Marvel fans to experience the movies exactly as how filmmakers intended them to be for the IMAX release.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

A video by YouTuber HDTVTest highlights the IMAX Enhanced features by doing a side-by-side comparison of MCU films in the 4K Blu-ray aspect ratio. Using two 55″ TV screens, the YouTuber played clips from Marvel movies to see if the difference would be significant. Disney+’s IMAX Enhanced version makes iconic battle scenes even more epic by showing them on a grander scale. It also shows details and trivia not seen in the standard widescreen presentation. One striking example is the scene in Avengers: Endgame where Pepper and Morgan were watching Tony Stark’s holographic farewell video. In the regular aspect ratio, viewers could see cropped figures of two men behind the mother and daughter. IMAX’s expanded picture size reveals that the men were, in fact, Captain America and Thor. While it’s fun for hard-core Marvel fans to hunt for such easter eggs, the YouTuber pointed out that there are a couple of downsides to watching the IMAX Enhanced version as well. For one, the wider picture size shows too much negative space. Additionally, having a larger frame and composition of the scene. This can alter the mood for particular sequences, such as close-ups and one-on-one confrontations.

Interestingly, Disney+ is the first streaming platform to offer this IMAX technology to its subscribers. The company promises to roll out even more features in the future even as Marvel Studios expands its catalog, which now includes series such as WandaVision, Loki, and Hawkeye. For fans of the MCU, having the option to watch their favorite superhero films in enhanced quality and size is definitely an awesome way to relive their cinematic experience.
