The brand new trailer of 2021’s The Eternals greatly expands the scope of the film by moving beyond the enigmatic group of superpowerful beings and focusing on the cosmic threats they will face. The reaction on Twitter has been mostly positive so far, with fans celebrating the visuals and reveals in the trailer.
A few fans have also employed some tried and true memes to convey their love of the trailer and some of the coincidences within it, like the presence of a pair of Stark brothers from Game Of Thrones. If the reaction from Twitter users is any indication, anticipation is building for the new MCU movie.
10 The God-Like Angelina Jolie

Both the comic book Eternal hero Thena and Maleficicent in the live-action Disney movies are equally god-like as @CalmNoy points out.
Many fans appreciate that it seems like Academy Award-winning actor Angelina Jolie is bringing the same gravitas to Thena that she did to Maleficent, despite their very different qualities as characters. Maleficent was an extremely powerful witch with a tragic backstory while Thena is functionally a god in Jack Kirby’s mythic concept of the Eternals.
9 Glowing Eyes Squad

Though their powers derive from vastly different sources like magic and cosmic energy, a number of MCU characters have glowing eyes, including Sylvie, Wanda Maximoff, and Monica Rambeau.
The ‘glowing eyes squad’ as @chrisdadeviant calls them now includes Ikaris, played by Richard Madden in The Eternals. It’s hard to tell if it’s a criticism or an appreciation of the trope, but as most fans seem to really enjoy all the characters cited, it’s probably not too much of a concern.
8 Stunning Visuals

@Eternalsnews celebrates the stunning visual work of Academy Award-winning director Chloe Zhao, who won for her amazing work in 2020’s Nomadland.
The sweeping visual style of The Eternals ranges from shots in rain forests and deserts utilizing natural lighting to truly cosmic FX shots involving massive spaceships and Celestials. Based on the trailer, the movie definitely embodies the visual aesthetic of the talented writer and director, bringing a distinctive new vision to the MCU.
7 MCU Has Their Own Superman

Twitter user @ArjunLoveablee states what a lot of fans might be thinking when he suggests the MCU beat them a Man Of Steel sequel with their own version of Superman in Ikaris. Fans are were likely laughing after considering Ikaris not only has glowing eyes, but he also fires laser beams from them.
Ikaris definitely shares some powers with Superman. He can fly, has super strength and of course, can shoot laser beams from his eyes. Many characters in comic books have similar powers, and it doesn’t seem Jack Kirby intended for Ikaris to be similar to Superman.
6 Stark Contrast

Game Of Thrones fans might be having flashbacks watching the new trailer, or maybe just wondering where the show’s characters would be today if it were still going. @snowjd28 utilizes the popular ‘how it started // how it’s going’ meme to fun effect to chart the progression of Robb Stark and Jon Snow, played by Madden and Kit Harrington respectively.
Harrington is playing Dane Whitman, who Eternals comic book fans know as The Black Knight. He is a longtime member of the Avengers and a romantic partner of Sersi, one of the members of the Eternals.
5 This Is Fine

The Eternals were told by the Celestials not to interfere in any threat to Earth that didn’t involve their longtime enemies the Deviants. That explains why the Eternals, who have been on Earth thousands of years, didn’t intervene in The Snap.
A lot of fans probably had the same thought as @ITYSLoki, who interpreted the directive as basically ‘don’t worry about it.’ As reasons for not getting involved with Thanos go, it has some problems and likely generated a lot of similar reactions among MCU fans.
4 Same Energy

Strong, powerful women have become more and more central in the MCU and Angelina Jolie’s Thena is just the latest example. @cakeblanchett_ feels Thena and Hela from Thor: Ragnarok have the same energy. It’s a great take as they have similar powers visually, somewhat, as Thena is able to construct weapons from energy as Hela does in the movie.
Both award-winning actresses also bring a lot of power and magnetism to their roles, which was evident for both from the very first footage fans saw of them.
3 Cool Powers

— Ren (@wandasolsen) August 19, 2021
@wandasolsen echoes a lot of fans on Twitter in noting how cool the powers of the Eternals are in the new trailer. For the majority of people, this is their first introduction to the team. The Eternals are relatively obscure even in the comic books, and so this is a good sign of general reaction to the new characters.
Besides Thena, who is one of the most powerful members of the Eternals, fans get a lot of Ikaris and other members in the trailer as well. Makkari (Lauren Ridloff) runs so fast in the trailer they appear to be imperceptible at times, promising even more action to come.
2 Actually, Thanos Is Your Cousin

— Charlie Schneider (@AwesomEmergency) August 19, 2021
There were a fair number of tweets on the subject of the Eternals intervening against Thanos, which seems to be a sticking point with fans. @AwesomEmergency uses a popular meme to point out that Thanos is an Eternal, descendent of A’Lars and related to the Eternals on Earth.
In the comics, Thanos is a hybrid of Eternals and Deviants, who were both created by the Celestials in the ancient past. If that is the case in the MCU, then the Eternals should have had the clearance to act when he snapped half of all life from the universe.
1 It’s Not Galactus
guys chill it’s not galactus it’s this guy #Eternals pic.twitter.com/2oGswcObI1
— regan ☥ (@FlSTOFKHONSHU) August 19, 2021
The trailer generated a lot of immediate interest, with enough fans believing the massive cosmic being glimpsed in it was Galactus, causing him to trend. @FISTOFKHONSHU is one of many people who asked for everyone to pause and realize it’s not Galactus, but a Celestial, one of the most powerful cosmic beings in Marvel Comics.
While it’s still unclear at the moment, given his distinctive red color, this particular Celestial could be either be Eson the Searcher or perhaps Arishem the Judge, the leader of the Celestial hosts who judges the worthiness of planets’ existence.
