The first Men in Black movie was a huge hit when it was released in 1997 and still holds up as an incredibly fun and funny sci-fi action-comedy. However, the franchise has failed to reach those heights again with the recent reboot attempt, Men in Black: International, proving to be a critical and commercial failure.

The movie tried to reignite things with a new group of characters, but they ended up being far less entertaining than the ones audiences loved in the previous movies. While some of the new characters were intelligent, others made such poor decisions that made the movie more frustrating than fun.

10 Agent H

Agent H is meant to be the new hotshot MIB agent who impresses the audience with his heroics while also being funny. Chris Hemsworth brings plenty of charm to the role and is a big part of the reason the movie isn’t a total bore, but Agent H is so childish it is hard to like him.

While there are plenty of heroes whose carefree attitude is used to good effect, Agent H is so immature that he constantly threatens the mission and he is never held responsible for this.

9 Vungus

Part of the fun of this franchise is the various alien creatures who are introduced and become part of the story. Vungus is a high-profile alien on Earth whom Agent H is assigned to chaperone during his stay.

Vungus and Agent H are old friends who have a lot of fun together, drinking and dancing in a club. But then Vungus eventually tells Agent M that he is carrying a very important item and that his life is in danger, which makes the audience wonder why he took so long to mention this. Dancing was probably not the best use of his time.

8 Twins

Early on in the movie, alien beings known as the Twins, thanks to their ability to duplicate, seem to be the main villains of the movie. They kill anyone who gets in their way and battle the MIB while trying to recover a powerful weapon.

However, it is later revealed that the Twins are actually trying to get the weapon so they can protect their planet from a more powerful alien known as the Hive. Given that MIB battles dangerous aliens, the Twins really should have explained their dilemma and save themselves a lot of trouble.

7 Luca

Luca is the burly henchman alien of the intergalactic arms dealer known as Riza. Luca’s role is quite small and he doesn’t make a big impact except for a small and rather silly twist involving Agent M.

He is mostly just muscle for Riza who does as he is told without really thinking. His one original thought in the whole movie is when he decides to betray Riza, which seems like a short-sighted idea.

6 Pawny

Pawny is the latest adorable alien creature to be featured in the franchise. While he doesn’t hold a candle to Baby Yoda, he is a memorable addition thanks largely to Kumail Nanjiani’s voice performance in the role.

Pawny likes to act like he is a helpful member of the team, but he is really just there to make comedic comments. He doesn’t actually offer any useful advice during the mission though he at least seems to recognize Agent H is a more useless member of the team.

5 Agent C

Agent C is meant to be the annoying stuffy agent who questions everything the heroes do. He sees Agent H as an irresponsible operative and thinks the bosses go too easy on him when he messes up.

While the audience is supposed to dislike Agent C and be suspicious of him, all of his issues with Agent H are completely valid. In fact, Agent C seems like one of the few competent people in MIB so it’s hard not to cheer for him rather than Agent H.

4 Agent High T

The commanding agent of the British sector of MIB is a veteran known as Agent High T. He was a former partner of Agent H and seems to look out for his protégé, protecting him from getting fired despite his reckless behavior.

However, it is later revealed that High T is actually the villainous Hive. When High T and Agent H previously faced off with the Hive, it took over High T’s body and wiped Agent H’s memory, using him to get the weapon he was after. It is a pretty solid plan, though in having High T’s body, he probably didn’t need Agent H.

3 Agent O

In the New York offices of MIB, things are overseen by Agent O, who seems to have a pretty good handle on all of the madness. When Molly, aka Agent M, finds the MIB headquarters, Agent O handles it in a very rational way, planning to wipe Molly’s mind and send her on her way.

However, Agent O is also smart enough to recognize talent when she sees it. She decides to hire Molly as Agent M which turns out to be a pretty good move.

2 Riza

One of the most memorable characters in the movie is Riza. The secondary villain is sadly featured very little, but Rebecca Ferguson’s performance brings a lot of energy to those scenes.

Riza is a former lover of Agent H but she is another person who is able to see what a screw-up he really is. When he comes to her looking to make a trade for a valuable item she has, she pretends to be torn up about their breakup, only to turn the tables on him, knowing the value of the item he seeks.

1 Agent M

Like many of the other actors in this movie, Tessa Thompson does her best to elevate the material with her considerable charm. However, unlike Agent H, her character Agent M is actually an easy hero to root for.

After meeting an alien when she was a kid, she becomes obsessed with learning about the MIB and tracking them down. She is able to do this, finding the organization that has remained hidden for a long time. As an agent, M learns about various races of aliens and their cultures while also making better decisions than pretty much everyone around her.
