Metroid Dread presents players with a plethora of enemies to defeat, including enemy encounters with E.M.M.I.s. An E.M.M.I. is a skulking, horrifying robot that patrols gray areas of the map. Throughout the game, players will have to defeat multiple E.M.M.I.s to progress through the story mode. E.M.M.I.s are not affected by normal weaponry, so players may need some extra information to efficiently beat them.

Before players can fight an E.M.M.I., they must defeat the Central Unit nearby to acquire the Omega Blaster and Omega Stream. Once players have the temporary Omega powers, they can deal damage to an E.M.M.I.’s outer armor and expose its head to damage. Players can then use the Omega Stream to take out the E.M.M.I. for good.

Each of the E.M.M.I.s has a different color paint job and must be defeated in a certain way. The general principle of breaking down an E.M.M.I.s faceplate to expose its head stays the same. However, some E.M.M.I.s have special powers that must be taken into consideration during the fight. After players defeat an E.M.M.I., they will gain a new ability, such as Metroid Dread‘s  Morph Ball.

Surviving An E.M.M.I. Encounter In Metroid Dread

Players will encounter the following E.M.M.I.s in Metroid Dread:

  • Gray E.M.M.I.: The first E.M.M.I. players will encounter in Artaria is already damaged. The shield around the gray E.M.M.I.’s head is broken, so players just need to fire the Omega Blaster at its head to defeat it. Samus does not get a power-up from this E.M.M.I.
  • White E.M.M.I.: Players must destroy the white E.M.M.I.’s outer shield to access its head. Drop down from the room with the Omega Cannon, aim left, and fire at the E.M.M.I. when it arrives from the left side. This E.M.M.I. grants the Spider Magnet upgrade.
  • Green E.M.M.I.: Head right from the Omega Cannon room to the top of the platform. The green E.M.M.I. will come from below and exit on the opposite side. Make space between Samus and this E.M.M.I. to break down its faceplate. This E.M.M.I. grants the Morph Ball upgrade.
  • Yellow E.M.M.I.: This E.M.M.I. is extraordinarily fast. Players must put as much distance between themselves and the yellow E.M.M.I. as possible. Use the long straightaway below to make ample space. This E.M.M.I. grants the Speed Booster upgrade.
  • Blue E.M.M.I.: This E.M.M.I. can freeze Samus with an ice ray. Players must use the magnetized slider on the ceiling to pull Samus across the room. Let the E.M.M.I. catch up and break its faceplate while it moves across the ceiling. This E.M.M.I. grants the Ice Missiles upgrade.
  • Purple E.M.M.I.: This E.M.M.I. can paralyze Samus with a laser. Outside the weapon room, fire the Omega Cannon at the button across the room. Take the Morph Ball route out. Shoot the lower left wall to move through. Then, shoot the wall above and destroy the E.M.M.I. as it catches up to Samus. This E.M.M.I. grants the Wave Beam upgrade.
  • Red E.M.M.I.: The last E.M.M.I. is defeated during a cutscene. This E.M.M.I. grants the Power Bomb upgrade.

Even though there are certain ways to defeat each E.M.M.I., the methods are not foolproof. If an E.M.M.I. catches up to Samus, it will trigger a quick time event that players must win to stay alive. The E.M.M.I.’s hand will flash a bright light, which players must press x to counter. If players miss the first counter check, they have one more chance to counter when the E.M.M.I.’s head flashes its light. Exhilarating boss encounters like these are part of why Metroid Dread is the fastest-selling game of the series in the U.K.
