Michael J. Fox shares a photo of him reuniting with his Back to the Future co-star Christopher Lloyd shortly after its 36th anniversary. Released in 1985, the sci-fi comedy centered on teenager Marty McFly as he is accidentally sent back to 1955 by a time-traveling DeLorean invented by his mad scientist friend Emmett “Doc” Brown. After inadvertently changing his parents’ history, he must find a way to bring them together and get back to the present before he is wiped from existence.

Alongside Fox and Lloyd, the cast for the original Back to the Future included Lea Thompson as Marty’s mother Lorraine, Crispin Glover as his father George and Thomas F. Wilson as Biff Tannen, a bully to George in the past and his boss in the present. The Robert Zemeckis-helmed film was a hit upon release, grossing over $388 million at the box offie and scoring rave reviews from critics. Two Back to the Future sequels would subsequently be released in 1989 and 1990 and would spawn a multimedia franchise including an animated TV show, various video games, theme park rides at Universal Studios and a stage musical last year.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Just over a month after the film’s 36th anniversary, Fox has taken to Instagram to share a photo with Lloyd and a hashtag for Back to the Future. The photo sees the duo seated in the backseat of a golf cart at what appears to be a stage. Check out the heartwarming photo below:

Though the sequels have divided many fans over the years, the idea of a Back to the Future reprisal has nonetheless been on many’s minds, especially as Hollywood continues to reboot and revive popular franchises. While the photo reunion may ignite some thought about this coming to life, the likelihood is low since Fox retired from acting last year due to struggles with his Parkinson’s disease. Additionally, with Zemeckis holding the rights to the franchise and assuring he would block all attempts at a reboot or remake, a proper revival with Fox and Lloyd returning is unlikely to happen.

That being said, the simple reunion of Fox and Lloyd for a photo or event appearance is sure to be enough to please Back to the Future fans. Over 30 years later and it’s easy to understand why just a photo is enough to excite fans of the franchise, with the trilogy still proving to be a staple in the sci-fi genre. Only time will tell whether the franchise will continue with a new film or if the coveted hoverboards from Part II finally come to the public after six years of waiting for them.
