An awesome new cosplay resurrects Miles Morales’ short-lived Shadow-Spider costume – an identity the younger Spider-Man took on when he was transported to the mystical Weirdworld along with his Champions teammates.

Miles became Shadow-Spider in Champions #25, from Jim Zub, Sean Izaakse, Max Dunbar, Marcio Menyz, Nolan Woodard, and Clayton Cowles. After the disappearance of Sam Alexander and Nadia Pym, aka Nova and the Wasp, through a magical portal, the Champions used the Siege Parallel to track them down, emerging into Marvel’s Weirdworld. Weirdworld is a dangerous mystical realm which is always shifting, home to countless competing species and societies inspired by both classic fantasy and sci-fi. Unfortunately, the Champions were transformed as part of their journey, with only Ironheart remembering her life on Earth.

Once transported to Weirdworld, the Champions took on new fantasy-inspired identities and even powers, with characters like Viv Vision, Brawn, and Ms. Marvel remembering new lives as Vivid Vessel, Brawnhammer, and Mystic Marvel. Miles, of course, became the adventurer known as Shadow-Spider, whose costume is recreated in the epic cosplay shared to Twitter by Khalid Brooks. Brooks’ costume recreates Miles’ half-mask and webbing-patterned cloak, as well as the many small knives Shadow-Spider hurls in place of his usual webs. The level of detail goes above and beyond, with even the costume’s padding appearing in the right areas.

While still a hero, Miles believed himself to be an adventurer who helped innocents survive against the forces of the Great Eshu (aka the Master of the World), working solo without friends or allies. Once Eshu was beaten and the team returned to Earth, Miles admitted that he’d been feeling out of place on the team lately, likely influencing the persona Weirdworld created once its magic took hold. As Shadow-Spider, Miles kept his agility and strength but lost his mechanical web-shooters. The biggest gain was his cloak, which allowed short-range teleportation in the style of fellow superhero Cloak but didn’t make the trip back to normality.

Single storyline transformations are a hallowed institution of superhero comics, and especially trips to medieval worlds. Being relatively new heroes, the Champions missed out on the events following Heroes Reborn, when a huge roster of Avengers were trapped in a medieval realm by Morgan le Fay, each taking on a new costume and name, such as the much-mocked Yeoman America. Of course, even in their new guises, the Champions were heroes, and Miles Morales got to work through some of his worries about his place on the team, returning to his regular Spider-Man costume with newfound reassurance that even under different names and remembering different lives, he and his friends came together to protect the innocent and make the world a better place.
