A clever player used Minecraft command blocks to make a minecart loop-de-loop, allowing for more creative roller coaster builds in the vanilla game. There seems to be no shortage of new Minecraft builds being shared on social media, with talented creators and sandbox fanatics utilizing the voxel sandbox’s many systems to craft remarkable things, like one Minecraft player’s one-to-one recreation of New York City and another’s lifelike Big Ben build. While some creations are strictly for show, others have practical applications in survival Minecraft, like one player’s functioning clock face.

An important tool in developing impressive projects is Minecraft’s command block, a block available in Creative worlds, custom maps, and multiplayer servers that execute commands automatically using the sandbox’s console. Though command blocks can only be obtained using commands or the pick block control, the unique block type is essential in executing commands simultaneously and creating vast, interconnected circuits that enable incredible in-game mechanics. Some players have used the block type to achieve impressive feats, such as one Minecraft player who built a copper statue automatically using magnets and command blocks.

Reddit user Quillbee-MC used Minecraft command blocks to make a minecart loop-de-loop that is perfect for roller coaster builds. Quillbee-MC built their loop-de-loop on a super flat world. And even though normal minecarts don’t follow the eccentric track, “with a few tweaks” the Reddit user was able to get a minecart to work on the loop-de-loop. The system isn’t perfect, since the minecart can’t actually rotate along with the upside-down track. However, it does glide in a circular fashion and can even be ridden by players. To create the original build, Quillbee-MC used rails equipped in the head slot of invisible armor stands, but the creation didn’t allow minecarts to move over them without the “wizardry” of command blocks.

The invention isn’t as complex as some other builds – like one player’s clever use of optical illusion in Minecraft to allow a rocket ship to travel to space – but the mechanism does have some fun applications in Mojang’s voxel sandbox. The minecart loop-de-loop can be used to craft wild roller coaster rides that have more depth and thrill than with original track designs. While there are limitless possibilities within Minecraft’s vanilla features, loop-de-loops have not been achieved without mods. For those unable or unwilling to download additional content packs from the internet, Quillbee-MC’s tactic can come in handy for theme park-level roller coaster builds.

As Mojang continues to update its decade-old game, fans will continue to flock to the voxel world to achieve unseen feats like one YouTuber’s recreation of Encanto in Minecraft. That is part of what makes Minecraft so enticing to millions of players, and why the game has maintained its popularity for over ten years.
