Minecraft Flat World Glitch Spawns Massive Cliff

A Minecraft player’s flat world mod gave them a surprise when it spawned a giant vertical cliff in their game. Mojang’s sandbox survival and crafting game has remained popular since its release over a decade ago due to the infinite possibilities afforded to its players by Minecraft‘s open nature. The game provides a toolkit with which players can build whatever they want and still experience aspects of survival, combat, and exploration gameplay if they are so inclined. Players have crafted all kinds of incredible things, including a beautiful Minecraft build of Yggdrasil, the world tree from Norse mythology. The ability to choose one’s own experience while providing a platform for artistically inclined fans to stretch their creative muscles is what has allowed Minecraft to stay beloved for so long.

Another thing that helps Minecraft remain popular is the ability to adjust the world on which you play. When creating a world, a player can go into their settings and make selections that drastically impact their experience of the game in that world. There are a variety of settings that can be changed to alter the world the player is entering, from things as simple as starting with a map to choosing whether to play on the standard infinite world setting or a Minecraft Classic World setting, which reduces the area to 256 by 256 blocks. Lastly, a player can choose to play on a flat world, which removes biomes, fortresses and other features making it convenient for crafting.

Today TheGamerGameplays, a Minecraft player on Reddit, shared an odd occurrence with the community. A glitch with their flat world caused a massive vertical cliff to spawn, resulting in a distinctly non-flat environment. The side of the cliff reveals exposed layers of ore and crystal, as though the cliff is a slice of the world that has been pulled out of place and situated on top of the ground elsewhere. The screenshot shared in the post does not give a clear picture of the scale of the Minecraft glitch, so it is hard to say if it affects only a small area or if the entire world beyond that point is is shifted.

The glitch, unfortunate as it may be, affords an interesting glimpse into the construction of Minecraft worlds. The side of the cliff has streams of water visibly running through it as well as some small lava flows, which occasionally intersect. The visible pockets of different materials scattered throughout the extracted chunk of terrain gives a cool visual representation of how material spawn rates manifest in the game.

Glitches are an unfortunate reality in any video game. Sometimes they result in minor irritation, sometimes in total disaster, and sometimes in hilarity. Some bugs can even be helpful, like a recently discovered Minecraft glitch that supplied infinite pork chops. This bug is likely relatively harmless unless it obstructs or ruins the entire world, but is certainly not what one expects to find in a world that is defined as flat. Hopefully this bug was not too disruptive for this unfortunate Minecraft player’s plans for their world, but if it was a quick remake would likely solve the problem for them.
