Fans of Minecraft and movies by critically acclaimed filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki are sure to enjoy this in-game creation based upon Howl’s Moving Castle. Talented gamers have been making use of this best-selling crafting title’s advanced building features to put together impressive works since it first came out in 2011. Even today the online community surrounding this game is going strong, with recent notable builds including a rebuilt ancient city and a rendition of Vietnam’s tallest building in Minecraft.

Thank’s to Minecraft‘s easy-to-learn, hard to master crafting mechanics, both novice and veteran players alike can find ways to craft unique, detailed pieces. Many of these fan builds are made with the help of creative mode, where much of the danger posed by Minecraft‘s many monsters and enemies is removed. In creative mode, all building blocks and other crafting supplies are readily available. This allows players to more easily create builds in the game’s signature blocky style, but the addition of mods and external rendering software like Blender and AutoCAD give tech-savvy Minecraft artists a greater deal of flexibility when it comes to how their creations are presented. These methods can make the game more silly, as is the case with the Minecraft upside-down gravity mod, or more realistic and detailed.

For Reddit user Qu1ntenR, this greater flexibility has led to recreating the titular building from Studio Ghibli’s Howl’s Moving Castle. The steampunk castle on display in this build is very similar to the one from Miyazaki’s 2005 animated film, boasting rudimentary facial features, smoky chimneys, and disproportionately short legs that allow it to shamble across scenic landscapes. The screenshot featured in the post has a very distinct style, almost appearing more like a painting than the low-res aesthetic that takes center stage with standard Minecraft creations. Qu1ntenR notes in the comments of the post that this appearance was achieved by importing the build into the rendering software Blender.

While recent creations like the charming Minecraft train station might be a better showcase of the game’s traditional style, creations like Qu1ntenR’s are still extremely impressive and respectable. Some might argue that the use of external software can be used as something of a crutch for Minecraft artists, but that doesn’t seem to be the case here; this Howl’s Moving Castle build undoubtedly required an incredible deal of hard work long before Blender was involved.

Whether or not this build strikes a chord with individual viewers is a subjective matter, but the commitment and the scale of the build and level of detail on display are undeniable. The faithfulness of this creation is also notable, as any fan of Howl’s Moving Castle will surely recognize this one-of-a-kind building. That passion, along with the deft use of Blender, makes this piece worth checking out for any fan.

Minecraft is currently available on all platforms.
