Using a custom Minecraft texture pack, a creative player has transformed the game’s sea-dwelling axolotl mob into a cuddly aquatic platypus. The randomly-generated worlds found in the beloved survival sandbox game are populated by various different creatures, including both hostile monsters and passive animals. The undersea salamanders known as axolotls, added to the game in Minecraft’s Caves & Cliffs Update: Part 1, add a great deal of variety to the game’s lush sea caves.

As one of the game’s newer mobs, Minecraft‘s axolotls demonstrate impressively advanced behaviors in order to simulate the real-world salamander’s lifestyle. While the mob is able to walk around on land, they will eventually die after being outside of water for too long which forces them to hang around a water source for safety. Axolotls can also play dead when attacked underwater, which is able to fool other ocean-dwelling creatures as well as inattentive or unaware player. Axolotls are also notable for hunting other underwater mobs, such as squid and pufferfish, but they are passive toward the player and others of its kind. The Minecraft Caves & Cliffs Update’s axolotls, goats and glow squid were all major additions to the game’s lineup of passive mobs when the update arrived in June 2021.

While axolotls are a ton of fun, Reddit user TrisTLB has transformed the amphibious salamanders into platypuses using a neat texture pack. The semiaquatic mammal makes a perfect replacement for the axolotl, given that both species prefer swimming in water but are capable of walking on land. TrisTLB’s fantastic texture pack creates a truly authentic interpretation of a Minecraft platypus, with the adorable creature fitting right in next to other mobs like goats and bunnies. Despite not being a mod that gives the platypus its own behavior, the axolotl retexture pack is a fine way to bring some duck-billed flair to a typical Minecraft world.

Since the introduction of the aquatic axolotl, Minecraft fans have fallen in love with the unusual salamanders and their aggressive hunting habits. In fact, one player took it upon themself to add a crossbow-wielding axolotl turtle hybrid to Minecraft, with the horrifying monstrosity being a formidable force on land or sea. The deadly mob is essentially just a golden axolotl riding on the back of a normal pink one, with a turtle sitting at the top of the bizarre stack. A powerful enchanted crossbow lets the trio deal great damage to any foes in its vicinity, which may include hapless villagers caught in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Platypuses are an adorable and very unusual animal, making them a perfect choice for inclusion in the blocky world of Minecraft. While a full-fledged mod could give the creatures unique behaviors, TrisTLB’s retextured axolotls get the job done. Hanging out by water and hunting undersea prey, the cuddly platypus feels right at home in Mojang’s survival sandbox world.

Minecraft is available on all platforms.
