An old-school gamer has recreated the retro PlayStation 2 console using the block-based tools found in Minecraft. Sony’s second gaming system launched back in 2000, and throughout its lifecycle it was a wildly successful piece of hardware. In 2020 fans found that Sony’s PS5 design ripped off a Minecraft build, and now a Minecraft player has returned the favor.

Mojang’s beloved Minecraft gives players the resources to complete an endless variety of digital builds. Since launch players have been using different materials to reconstruct real-world structures, mimic fictional locations or even design entirely new architecture based on their imagination. Mojang continues supporting the game, too, which frequently adds fascinating new resources for fans to manipulate. Minecraft’s Redstone mechanic can even be used to program special blocks, like lights and pistons, to bring truly advanced designs to life. Although the game launched back in 2009, devoted players continue to create new and more breathtaking builds. For example, a Minecraft build of Avatar’s Southern Air Temple serves as a grand homage to the beloved Nickelodeon series.

Paying tribute to gaming history, Reddit user JustToBrowse3 recently unveiled a Minecraft version of the PlayStation 2. The iconic console has a noticeably flat shape, so it seems appropriate that the massive model is built on a superflat map. Sony’s old-school hardware is recreated in a simplistic style, but every memorable detail is faithfully included. The PS2’s typography, memory cards, power button and PlayStation logo are all exactly where fans will remember them. While JustToBrowse3’s Minecraft version of the PS2 is unable to run beloved titles like Metal Gear Solid 3 or Jak & Daxter, the build still brings up plenty of nostalgic memories.

The PlayStation 2’s stark black design has entered the annals of gaming history, and many fans seem strangely determined to recreate the console using blocks. A LEGO PS2 console Idea campaign was started last year, with its goal being to turn a concept design into an official LEGO set. The impressive 1:1 replica of Sony’s system comes complete with a wired controller, turning the brick build into the spitting image of Sony’s early 2000s system. The to-scale replica is made up of a remarkable 1941 pieces, creating an astounding level of detail.

Minecraft has been used as a platform for many impressive creations, and JustToBrowse3’s PlayStation 2 is a lovably nostalgic build for any old-school gamer. Despite the survival sandbox’s block-based nature, the PS2 recreation manages to fit in a commendable amount of detail. Even though this PlayStation 2 doesn’t actually work, its disc reader might still work better than the actual PS2.
