The anticipated Caves & Cliffs update for Minecraft has inspired a talented player to imagine what a hypothetical River Update for the game could’ve looked like, complete with new types of rivers and waterfalls. It might not be too outlandish for the next major update to the game to touch on bodies of water like this, following the current update, which modifies underground caves and mountains.

Quite recently, Mojang announced that the Caves & Cliffs update will be split in half for two separate releases. Minecraft fans will get the first part this summer, taking advantage of all the new blocks, mobs, and crafting recipes. The most complicated part of the update, a revised generation system of caves and mountains, will be left for a Holiday season release. Unfortunately, the promising archeology mechanic will miss both the releases as it has yet to be redesigned into a properly engaging activity.

In a new video, YouTube content creator disruptive_builds suggested a handful of enticing ideas for a hypothetical River Update for Minecraft. The author came up with a few new types of rivers to give the game’s natural watercourses a unique look. The update introduces a number of distinctive biome variants, starting with Lush Rivers. In the player’s view, these should be overwhelmed with dense vegetation and a generous amount of lily pads. Next comes the Dried River biome, which is basically a drained riverbed with no water in it. A Lush Creek variant is narrow and curvy, overgrown by trees and sugarcane. Streams are even smaller, weighing in at just 1-2 blocks wide. Disruptive_builds also designed Small and Large Waterfall biomes, and the latter can randomly spawn hidden caves. Obviously, since none of the suggested biome variants actually exist in Minecraft, everything shown in the trailer had to be assembled through manual labor.

The most recent content update for Minecraft hugely reimagined the game’s Nether realm, adding a variety of diverse biomes and introducing the game’s most valuable ore to date. Mojang went as far as envisioning unique forest areas for the hellish alternate dimension, populating them with brand new mobs. The most attractive novelty, though, was the Ancient Debris block, which can be harvested to upgrade all the diamond gear to a higher level of effectiveness. As the rarest crafting resource, the ore only spawns in tiny amounts in the darkest depths of the Nether.

Since most of the features included in the Caves & Cliffs update have been revealed and even delivered in snapshots, it’s quite understandable that Minecraft fans are already fantasizing about the next big expansion. The featured River Update, however, looks a little bit too niche to ever make it to the game as a single package. Mojang will probably revamp another big part of the game next time, but new types of rivers could still be incorporated somewhere down the line.

Minecraft is available on all platforms.
