One gamer was recently lucky enough to receive a mint condition GameCube as a gift from their grandparents. The console line was discontinued in 2007, one year after Nintendo launched one of its most successful gaming devices ever – the Wii.

Debuting in 2001, the GameCube was Nintendo’s first console of the new millennium and served as the gaming giant’s primary console for nearly six years competing against Sony’s PlayStation 2 and Microsoft’s original Xbox. Over its lifespan, it was reported that just over 20 million units were sold and the system was generally well-received. The GameCube had several successful titles, including the likes of The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker and Super Smash Bros. Melee.

Now, fourteen years after Nintendo stopped producing the GameCube, one lucky gamer was recently gifted a mint condition unit by none other than their grandparents. Twitter user BootyHaver shared a picture of the boxed console next to a controller and stack of games, one of which was Star Wars Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast. According to the gamer, the GameCube was originally bought by friends of their grandparents for their own grandchildren 20 years ago. The system received little use, however, and was given to the Twitter user’s grandparents who in turn passed it on their grandchild.

This particular GameCube seems to have been purchased during the console’s initial launch all the way back in 2001. Not only do the unit and box appear in excellent condition, but apparently the manuals and plastics found inside are all still there and in fine order as well. In both collecting and gaming terms, this is an incredibly unique find given its age and quality.

Old consoles and original games made for GameCube can sell for thousands of dollars depending on who is buying and the above addition is likely worth a fair amount. That said, it is unlikely this particular unit will be on the market anytime soon because of the meaning behind it. One can surmise from this user’s tweets that their grandparents are not very familiar with gaming, but that did not stop them from giving this gift. They simply knew their grandchild was a massive gamer and that the gaming aficionado might at the very least appreciate the sentiment behind the gift if not the actual console itself. It seems, however, that this Twitter user is thrilled with all aspects of their new old console and it will mean so much more because of the story behind it.
