The Mortal Kombat series is no stranger to pop culture crossovers. The Joker, Terminator, Spawn, Kratos, Freddy Kreuger, and many other guest characters have appeared in games throughout the franchise’s history, including Mortal Kombat 11. Now, with a new Mortal Kombat movie hitting theaters (and HBO’s streaming service) later this year, the chances of new DLC characters or, at the very least, DLC costumes, for MK11 are looking pretty likely.

Mortal Kombat (2021) is directed by Simon McQuoid and, unlike other previous attempts at a film adaptation for the beloved fighting series, will feature an R rating. So far, fans know that the movie centers around an MMA fighter named Cole Young and will prominently feature the rivalry between Sub-Zero and Scorpion. To try and survive, Cole seeks out Sonya Blade and finds himself at Lord Raiden’s temple, where he trains with Liu Kang, Kung Lao and others to take down their Outworld enemies.

So, why does this mean DLC for MK11? It would follow a pattern Mortal Kombat and Warner Bros. have already laid out.

MK11 DLC Costumes For The New Movie

In November 2020, the Klassic MK Movie Skin Pack hit digital store shelves, letting players travel back in time to 1995 when film directors made their first attempt at a Mortal Kombat movie. For $5.99, fans of the franchise can don character appearances and voices from the 1995 versions of Raiden, Johnny Cage, and Sonya Blade.

Of course, this bundle capitalizes on nostalgia, but it makes sense that, if NetherRealm Studios went through the trouble to create costumes from a movie 25 years old, modern interpretations of film costumes could be headed to MK11 to promote the new movie and excite fans as well. Plus, two of the confirmed characters in the 2021 Mortal Kombat movie are Raiden and Sonya Blade, two of the three characters that show up in the Klassic MK Movie Skin Pack.

Other than that, it truly is good marketing, and rumors have already been circulating about new DLC since last November. Adding in DLC costumes that show off the designs of beloved Mortal Kombat characters in the new movie draws more attention to its release, and will no doubt excite players who are fans of the series. If fans are willing to pay $5.99 for skins of a movie from 1995 with rather mixed reviews, it would make sense to expect that at least a good portion of the dedicated fanbase would be clamoring to deck their characters out in newer designs from the Mortal Kombat universe. Fans will have to wait and see, but with the marketing campaign for the movie ramping up closer to release and rumors about Mortal Kombat DLC in circulation, the chances for new material in MK11 are looking good.
