Modern Family Star Speechless Over WandaVision Episode 7’s Homage

Julie Bowen, most famously known for her role as Claire Dunphy on Modern Family, found herself speechless after WandaVision paid homage to the ABC show. Since its run began in mid-January, WandaVision has referenced a variety of popular television shows throughout the decades. The series’ most recent episode, titled “Breaking The Fourth Wall”, made many direct references to Modern Family, inspiring Bowen to take to social media to post her emotional response.

Each episode of the Disney+ series follows Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) as she navigates life within the picturesque suburban town of Westview. Fans of the show watch Wanda and her husband, the Avenger Vision (Paul Bettany), through two television screens, as the events of their reality are being experienced sitcom-style by special agents on the outside of the town’s force-field barrier. Each episode of Wanda’s fictional reality mimics a different decade of classic American television, with the latest episode landing on 2000s mockumentary-style, mirroring Modern Family. 

Bowen took to Instagram to express her feelings of gratitude for the reference. Her post includes two images of TVs paused on the WandaVision introduction title sequence, which mimics Modern Family‘s font and format, as well as a screengrab of Wanda in the episode staring deadpan at the camera, something Bowen has done countless times as her character Claire Dunphy. Accompanying the images is a paragraph-long caption emphasizing her shock and thanking Marvel. The air date of the WandaVision episode was also an emotional anniversary for Bowen, as it marked exactly 1 year since Modern Family wrapped filming on its final season. The show ran for eleven seasons after its premiere in 2009 and was the start of many cast members’ successful acting careers, which inspired many of Bowen’s co-stars to take to social media to make statements of their own. However, only Julie Bowen commented on the Modern Family reference in the WandaVision episode.

Having Marvel feature elements from Modern Family in WandaVision, a show which has only referenced a select handful of iconic television sitcoms, only supports the argument that Modern Family became an instant classic the moment it premiered in 2009. With two episodes to go in WandaVision, it will be interesting to see how the show will continue its pattern of referencing a new decade each episode, considering Modern Family ended in April 2020. For now, fans are left to wonder which iconic reference is coming next.
